What You Will Do:

Geotechnical program manager and geotechnical lead for transportation projects within District 8 (Cincinnati region). The District Geotechnical Engineer position is unique as the position offers opportunities to experience all aspects of ODOT project development from planning and programing to design and construction. Develops project scopes for geohazards and providers input on scopes for projects throughout the District. Coordinates project development with various technical disciplines within ODOT. Performs geotechnical design for in-house projects. Reviews project plans (ODOT Let and Local Let) for conformance with ODOT geotechnical standards and specifications as well as constructability. Supports District Construction staff to solve a wide range of construction problems involving items such as pile driving, MSE walls, drilled shafts, and chemical stabilization. Reviews and accepts geotechnical shop drawings on behalf of the District. Experience with ODOT geotechnical design guidelines and the ODOT plan development processes (PDP) is preferred but not required. The position offers teleworking as permitted by District policy.

Official Position Description:

Acts as staff specialist, District Geotechnical Engineer,(i.e., develops & evaluates plans & criteria for variety of projects & activities to be carried out by others; assesses feasibility & soundness of proposed engineering designs, evaluation tests, products or equipment when necessary data is insufficient or confirmation by testing is advisable), &/or supervises/leads team of lower level transportation engineers, technicians, &/or support personnel by assigning tasks, monitoring work progress, & evaluating the work completed on highway plans. Performs other supervisory responsibilities (i.e. completes performance evaluations, coaches' staff, & approves leaves) for subordinate staff. Develops in-house plans &/or reviews designs submitted by District Engineers, consulting engineers, & Local Governments. Coordinates design work with District Survey area. Assures accurate & timely updating of management information systems as they relate to the delivery of the program (i.e. ELLIS, TMS,) & assures their business rules, policies, & procedures are implemented, used & maintained as standard business practice in their designated work environments. Signs plans &/or other engineering documents as registered professional engineer.

Analyzes geotechnical problems & structure foundation designs by reviewing data & operating state vehicle to inspect site locations. Attends project scope field reviews. Prepares plans, design revisions to solve plan implementation problems, & makes recommendations for repairs &/or replacement using computer aided drafting & design (i.e., CADD, Geopack) & drafting equipment. Recommends &/or designs change orders, reviews complex engineering reports & analyzes bids. Analyzes & resolves geometric design problems (e.g., geotechnical foundation design, slope stability, sub-grade stability, mine subsidence, etc.). Instructs & trains employees in computation of plan quantities, & general coordination of design process through completion of final contract plans. Directs engineering/technical activities on behalf of supervisor to plan, schedule & coordinate work, assists in development of section policy, budget preparation &/or long-range planning.

Advises offices, consulting firms, Federal Highway Administration, local public agencies & others with projects/problems in assigned area of expertise. Testifies in civil court proceedings as employee of Department. Represents department at conferences to resolve questions. Operates state vehicle to travel throughout district to inspect site locations. Attend meetings & training seminars.

Assists Contractor Compliance Officers (CCOs) in ensuring Commercially Useful Function (CUF) requirements are met for professional services (e.g., oversees interviews, fills out forms & ensures completed forms are documented with recommendation of compliance vs. non-compliance).

Qualifications
Licensed as registered professional engineer by Ohio State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers & Surveyors; 12 mos. exp. as group or project leader providing work direction & training to engineering technicians &/or lower-level engineers or 12 mos. exp. in conducting engineering related research (i.e., conducting engineering related research only applies to staff specialist positions); if assigned to operate a state vehicle to travel to & inspect project sites, must possess valid driver's license.

-Or licensed as registered professional engineer by Ohio State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers & Surveyors; 12 mos. exp. as Transportation Engineer 2, 85642; if assigned to operate a state vehicle to travel to & inspect project sites, must possess valid driver's license.

-Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above may be substituted for the experience required, but not for the mandated registration.
