NDDOT Starting Salary: Transportation Engineer II: $5,824 / month

Transportation Engineer I*: $5,245 / month

*Applicants who anticipate receiving their degree by May of 2025 are eligible to apply; the start date is flexible.

This position is eligible for remote work, with in-person duties, and meetings required.

Summary of Work

At the North Dakota Department of Transportation, we owe our success to our TEAM. As a Transportation Engineer I/II in the Programming Division, you will have the opportunity to layout department projects, learning about a variety of engineering disciplines and developing skills that will set you up for a great career in engineering. Your primary responsibilities in this position will be:
  • Conduct Scoping Studies
    • Visit potential project sites throughout the state to:
      • Verify roadway characteristics.
      • Identify issues and needs.
      • Discuss potential improvements with District engineers.
  • Develop Scoping Reports
    • Investigate and develop potential improvement options
    • Coordinate with other engineering divisions to review applicable issues and determine recommendations
    • Organize all available roadway data, issues, and recommendations into an accurate report.
    • Develop cost estimates and visuals created with MicroStation and ArcGIS.
    • Create presentations of potential improvement options for NDDOT leadership to aid in decision making
  • Assist with Special Programs & Funding Management
    • Solicit, scope & track projects for special funding programs
    • Oversee landscape architecture consultants assisting with scoping Rural Community Enhancement Program projects
  • Assist in the Development, Evaluation, and Future Direction of the NDDOT Scoping Process
    • Keep up with changing technology, construction practices, laws, strategic plans, and management objectives.
    • Use knowledge of those elements to make recommendations to improve existing practices.
  • Assist Traffic Operations
    • Gain additional experience aiding the Traffic Operations section.

Minimum Qualifications

Transportation Engineer II:
  • Bachelor's degree in civil, transportation, or construction engineering
  • Two years of professional-level engineering work experience
  • Eligibility to write the Fundamentals of Engineering exam as specified by the Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.
  • Requires a class D driver's license for travel to meetings and project locations.
Transportation Engineer I:
  • Bachelor's degree in civil, transportation, or construction engineering
  • Eligibility to write the Fundamentals of Engineering exam as specified by the Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.
  • Requires a class D driver's license for travel to meetings and project locations.
