Position Information

TxDOT San Antonio District is looking to hire a Bridge Design Engineer III, IV, or V based in San Antonio, TX. The Bridge Office is responsible for design, inspection, and the only full-time bridge maintenance team within TxDOT. Within the Bridge Design Section, this individual will be responsible for performing bridge and structural engineering work that serves the 12-county region that makes up the San Antonio District. Annual Salary Ranges

Transportation Engineer III (B26): $72,886 - $123,267

Transportation Engineer IV (B27): $80,174 - $135,594

Transportation Engineer V (B28): $88,191 - $149,155

This position is for (1) Transportation Engineer III, IV or V. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on the applicant's work experience, education, skill level, and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs

Position Description

Performs highly advanced and complex transportation bridge and structural engineering work in design, construction, and maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the

work product.

Essential Duties:

Transportation Engineer III

  • Designs highly complex bridge projects and performs specialized design
  • Performs highly complex structural analysis of bridge designs
  • Performs structural review of complex forming, false work and erection details
  • Coordinates and monitors assigned projects/programs/plans
  • Makes presentations and represents TxDOT
  • Recommends bridge replacement, bridge rehabilitation and repair of damaged bridges
  • Reviews designs and detailed drawings of bridges and related structures prepared by other engineers and technicians
  • Reviews shop drawings prepared by fabricators for bridges and related structures
  • Trains engineering staff
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned


Transportation Engineer IV

In addition to the duties listed above

  • Coordinates and monitors consultant contracts related projects.
  • Develops short-term and long-term goals and coordinates planning activities and resources required to meet goals
  • Develops specifications for special bridge design details and projects


Transportation Engineer V

In addition to the duties listed above

  • Assists Project Managers to establish realistic and achievable schedule baselines for advanced and highly complex projects
  • Leads/Trains professional and administrative staff
  • Monitors consultants' progress and work quality; checks invoices and associated documents; prepares supplemental agreements
  • Represents the district/division at technical meetings and public hearings at local, state, federal and international levels


Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.

Experience:

Transportation Engineer III: 6 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis . Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Transportation Engineer IV: 7 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis . Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Transportation Engineer V: 8 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis . Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Licensed Prof Engineer*
  • If performing underwater bridge inspections: Must have Open Water Diver certification.
  • For Bridge Inspection: Must have completed a comprehensive training course based on the Bridge Inspector's Training Manual or NICET Level III or IV certification in Bridge Safety Inspection within (1) year of date of hire.


*Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States , but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.

Transportation Engineer V

  • Persuasion and negotiation of critical issues
  • Negotiating settlement of differences without damaging relationships; applying effective questioning and listening techniques to determine other parties' positions in a direct and diplomatic manner
  • Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both internal and external
  • Speaking to present images and ideas in a clear, concise, organized, and interesting manner to optimize audience understanding and keep the group focused
  • Monitoring the status and progress of projects
  • Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
  • Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and fingers
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes visual inspection of small defects/parts
