Job Description and Duties

Under the general supervision of a Senior Transportation Engineer, this position is responsible for performing a wide variety of professional transportation engineering work related to the support of District 2 Maintenance and Operations; including Emergency Management and Major Damage Coordination. This position will manage and assist with the delivery of projects within the District's various programs (HM and SHOPP). Additionally, the incumbent will perform necessary field inspection of various parts of State-owned roadway and structure facilities, including but not limited to surface and subsurface drainage systems; pavement conditions; building conditions; along with other components associated with the State Highway System.

Works as a Project Engineer developing pavement preservation contracts Ready to List (RTL) and advertisements for award by the Department of Engineering services, working cooperatively with all functional units in District 2. Assist the District Maintenance Office Engineer in preparing contract specification, submittal to functional units, district circulations, peer reviews and submittal of Authority to Advertise District Delegation (AADD) for various maintenance pavement preservation projects. Perform a variety of professional engineering work in an office and field environment.

Job assignments may be subject to rotation, changes of shift, work hours and workdays, often have fieldwork requiring travel and other duties as required. Incumbent will be required to have a valid CA class C driver's license.

The Caltrans Transportation Engineer (Civil) Rotation Program is a mandatory 24 month to 33 months rotation assignment for all permanent, full-time Transportation Engineer (Civil) employees that have completed their probationary period hired by Caltrans Districts after June 22, 2018, or an earlier date as determined by the Districts. The purpose of Rotation Program is to provide opportunities for employees and Caltrans to benefit by participating in a standardized process that systematically engages newly hired engineers. Participants will develop well-rounded project delivery knowledge, skills, and abilities by rotating through diverse project delivery functional units. The Rotation Program includes mandatory core assignments in Design and Construction units, as well as a mandatory elective assignment. Each rotation assignment is typically between 6 to 12 months and will be based on workload needs and the employee's goals. Assignments may involve long term travel and can be located throughout the state.

In addition to the Caltrans Transportation Engineer (Civil) Rotation Program, an incumbent may be required to go on loan to another project delivery function when there are temporary or peak staffing needs in those areas.

New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.
