Salary Grade/Plan:

Transportation Engineer Tech I (A13): $32,439 - $49,388

Transportation Engineer Tech II (A15): $35,976 - $55,045

Transportation Engineer Tech III (A17): $39,976 - $61,399

Position Description

Performs basic drafting, calculations and field work; learns basic design procedures and techniques. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Essential Duties:

Transportation Engineer Tech I:

  • Assists in preparation of quantity summaries, hydraulic and utility studies and right-of-way maps.
  • Learns to use automated roadway programs, hydraulic design programs and/or interactive graphics.
  • Performs basic drafting and calculations in support of design activities; copies detailed plans and drawings.
  • Prepares field notes.
  • Works on reproduction of plans.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Transportaton Engineer Tech II:

The above, and:

  • Assists in on-the-job training of less experienced technicians.
  • Performs basic design work
  • Performs intermediate drafting and calculations in support of design activities; accomplishes non-routine and complex assignments.
  • Prepares quantity summaries, hydraulic and utility studies and right-of-way maps.
  • Prepares roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, and building plans.
  • Uses automated programs, interactive graphics and the Design and Construction Information System.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Transportation Engineer Tech III:

The above, and:

  • Learns additional automated design methods or specialized design procedures in areas including bridge/culvert detailing, traffic management, geometric design, signal/lighting design, retaining walls, and building design.
  • Performs advanced drafting and calculations in support of design activities; develops graphic presentations that include distinctive design features.
  • Prepares environmental documents.
  • Reviews entire sets of plans for format, drafting and calculation errors and correlation of plans and specifications.
  • Uses automated programs, interactive graphics and the Design and Construction Information System.
  • Writes general notes, specifications and provisions
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience :

Transportation Engineer Tech I: None (Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent). Related College education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basi s. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Transportation Engineer Tech II: 3 years drafting, design, plan preparation. (Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent). Transportation Engineer Tech III: 4 years drafting, design, plan preparation. (Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent). Licenses and Certifications:

• Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes
  • Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs
  • Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
  • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels;receive information by oral communication
  • Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
