Position Information

TxDOT's Brownwood District is searching for a Crew Chief to join our Comanche Co. Maintenance section!

This position performs skilled transportation maintenance activities as well as assisting in leading a team of Highway Maintenance Technicians in maintaining roadways, operating equipment and traffic control operations while gaining additional skills in leadership and roadway maintenance work.

This is an key role within the section with great opportunity for advancement within the organization.

Position Description

Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

  • Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads and put up warning signs, and organize response of crews.
  • Assists in administration of the maintenance section.
  • Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.
  • Inspects roads while en route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors.
  • Inspects work performed by maintenance contractors.
  • Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.
  • Operates light and heavy equipment
  • Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment
  • Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems; presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members' career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.

Experience: 5 years experience in roadway maintenance related work. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis . Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

      • Valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) driver's license with valid "N" endorsement or have obtained "N"

        endorsement within 90 calendar days of employment. This position requires driving a state vehicle

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to noise

  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
  • Subject to atmospheric conditions-fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Sitting - prolonged periods of time
  • Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc
  • Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another

  • This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.

  • Must be able to report for duty within 30 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
