In the Division of Construction, Office of Materials Management, travels to inspect standard projects & materials required for bridge projects (e.g., ensures quality workmanship & materials; physical dimensions, fit-up of all components, cleaning, & painting) to ensure conformance to approved standard detailed drawings & applicable specifications; performs quality assurance reviews of facilities where steel & other metals for bridges are manufactured & housed for structural steel to build bridges & other related projects for the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT). Gauges paint for dry film thickness & obtains samples for testing, as needed. Approves use of contingencies (e.g., changes in fabrication of steel which affects the design plan, changes to grade of steel used, or substitution of materials) to reduce delays in fabrication.

Witnesses, reviews, & evaluates radiographic magnetic particle & ultrasonic (i.e., nondestructive testing) examinations of weld & base metal performed by fabricator or private testing agency. Performs quality assurance reviews of light pole, sign support, sign signal support, metal pipe, fencing, guardrail & reinforcing steel bar material suppliers & producers for conformance to all applicable specifications. Checks quality of workmanship & materials & physical dimensions; obtains samples for testing, as needed. Prepares daily written reports of findings, concerning the above, for information on the fabricator's supervisors & for internal files; maintains records of materials inspected (e.g., corrective test results & welding & material certifications); makes final written reports regarding completed work & presents to internal stakeholders. Checks adequacy of welding & testing equipment to be used & verifies qualifications of welding & testing personnel. Acts in advisory capacity (e.g., ensure properly materials are delivered to project(s), recommends repair methods suitable to ODOT standards for steel bridges & other deficient traffic structures).

Qualifications

5 yrs. engineering related technical experience in simple construction/ rehabilitation/maintenance projects or planning & design of simple civil engineering projects or materials testing, with experience to be commensurate with position to be filled. -Or completion of associate degree program in engineering technology; 3 yrs. engineering related technical experience in simple construction/ rehabilitation/maintenance projects or planning & design of simple civil engineering projects or materials testing, with experience to be commensurate with position to be filled.

-Or 12 mos. exp. as Transportation Technical Specialist, 85871, with experience to be commensurate with position to be filled.

-Or equivalent of minimum class qualifications for employment noted above.
