PRIMARY FUNCTION :

To perform, under the responsibility and supervision of the surgeon, diagnostics and therapeutic tasks to allow the physician to extend his/her services through the more effective use of his/her knowledge in the sphere of decision making required to establish a diagnosis and to plan therapy. He/she may assist in gathering the data necessary in implementing the therapeutic plan of the surgeon. Meets the qualifications to provide care for patients in the specific age range on their assigned clinical area.
Additionally, the physician assistant will act as the patient advocate in the medical care systems serving as confidant, advisor, and liaison between patients and physicians.
Reports directly to the surgeon for all patient-care-related functions. Charting privileges will be determined by the Procedure and Medical Records Committee as recommended by the surgeon. Deals directly with the medical staff members, nursing personnel and other departments to coordinate patient care requirements.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Provide clinical support in an inpatient and outpatient setting.
  • Sees patients in a clinic setting, performing routine medical assessments and treatments, which may include: obtaining medical histories, performing physical examinations, counseling patients, etc. and performs minor outpatient surgical procedures in a clinic setting when appropriate and documents all activities in accordance with established policies and protocols.
  • Forms patient assessment and develops preliminary patient care plan and performs and documents all activities in accordance with established policies and protocols.
  • Provides post-operative care to patients by evaluating patient's physical condition to ensure no secondary complications have occurred due to surgery, removes sutures and/or staples, aspirates wound fluids, provides specific patient care as needed in accordance with established policies and protocols.
  • Records office notes for patient's using the electronic medical records system to update patient records and for billing purposes.
  • Makes hospital patient visits (rounds) with physician and/or independently to monitor patient's current physical condition.
  • Performs other nonsurgical health care tasks that are normally taught in courses of training approved by the board, that are consistent with the training and experience of the physician assistant and that have been properly delegated by the supervising physician.
  • Functions as an APP involving diagnosis and initiation of treatment for trauma patients in collaboration with Trauma Attending.
  • Serves as a contact person for nursing staff, medical staff, social service, pastoral care and other hospital departments regarding the management of ACS service patients
  • Coordinates care from Emergency department through inpatient care.
  • The position also requires handling patient calls and triaging the calls as indicated.
  • Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the iSCORE values of Jefferson.

OTHER FUNCTIONS AND COMPETENCIES needed in addition to Essential Functions:
  • Orders, prescribes, dispenses and administers drugs and medical devices that are delegated by the supervising physician and which are defined in the federal controlled substances act.
  • Protects patients' rights by maintaining confidentiality of personal and financial information in order to comply with HIPAA and Practice requirements.
  • Facilitates disposition of general ACS service patients by coordinating care with ancillary services, patient and family as outpatient.
  • Orders and evaluates results of lab, x-ray and other diagnostic tests as indicated.
  • Prescribes and recommends prescriptions of medication and other treatment according to established federal and state regulations and requirements.
  • Attends specific multidisciplinary floor rounds when available.
  • Maintains professional competence through supervision, continuing education and other relevant learning experiences.
  • Assist the Trauma Medical Director and Trauma Program Manager as needed to maintain State of Pennsylvania designation requirements as well as American College of Surgeons verification requirements.
  • Assists with learning needs assessments, formal and informal for pre-hospital personnel, nurses and physicians
  • Provide policy and procedure education to those who interface with the TACS program
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Trauma Medical Director
  • Incorporates performance improvement into ones professional practice
  • Can participate in Trauma Committees- this includes Trauma M&M and Trauma Multi-disciplinary Operations Committee
  • Informs Division Director and team members of performance improvement issues
  • Communicates with referring doctors regarding patient care.
  • Maintains ongoing departmental quality improvement studies in concert with supervising physician and director of physician extender services.
  • Fully utilize and maintain training with the institutions medial record system.
  • Other duties assigned.


Qualifications

Master's Degree

National Board Certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant

ACLS and BCLS certification

5 years experience in a clinical setting preferred
