MedStar Montgomery Medical Center is looking for a PRN\rUnit Clerk in the Observation department. This position will provide coverage\rfrom 7:00AM - 7:30PM.
The Unit Clerk performs designated clerical duties at the unit level relating\rto communication, updating and organization of information. They are\rresponsible for reporting pertinent information to the immediate supervisor and\rresponding to inquiries and requests from staff, physicians, families, other\rdepartments/disciplines, etc.

Primary Duties
Technical: Supports work of the department by\r performing clerical and secretarial tasks. Transcribes physician orders\r and completes associated paperwork. Compiles paperwork and inputs\r specified computer data related to admission, discharge, transfer or expiration\r of a patient. Maintains patient records per hospital policy and reviews\r for completeness as needed throughout treatment (e.g. prior to surgery,\r transfer, and discharge). Obtains and files results from lab, radiology,\r physician office, etc., as needed. Files and prepares paperwork as\r directed by supervisor. Prints schedules, reports, and patient data as\r requested.
Communication: Supports work of the department by\r facilitating transfer of information. Answers and directs all phone calls;\r takes messages as needed. Greets all persons coming to nurses' station,\r answers inquiries, offers direction and assistance, takes and relays\r messages, run errands. Exchanges information with other units/departments,\r physician offices, etc., as requested. Relays patient/family requests to\r appropriate unit staff. Initiates phone calls, pages, and codes as\r directed. Uses appropriate means to communicate with other unit staff\r (Vocera, overhead paging, etc.) Confirms and communicates scheduling of\r procedures/therapeutic services.
Finance: Supports department by posting charges.\r Completes appropriate requisitions/computer entries for consults,\r diagnostic tests, and therapeutic services for patients and coordinates\r appointments with respective departments. Inputs data for patient charges.\r Maintains unit supplies and orders same using online requisition system\r (e.g. Lawson) or other approved process.
Development: Maintains and updates current knowledge.\r Conducts all duties within legal boundaries of position and according to\r hospital policy and procedures. Works with supervisor to identify learning\r needs and takes actions to address these needs. Attends hospital sponsored\r training programs as required by the department. Meets all mandatory\r obligations
Organizational knowledge: Works effectively within and\r between departments. Participates on intra/inter-departmental teams and\r committees, communicating unit knowledge as appropriate. Provides\r department/unit with information and knowledge acquired during team and\r committee participation. Demonstrates a constructive approach during all\r interactions. Serves as a unit resource within areas of responsibility
Department/Unit Specific Functions and Duties\r Completes other tasks within realm of position as assigned. Operating\r Room: Maintains and updates Operating Room procedure schedule.

Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED or equivalent work\r experience, Required.
1-2 years' work experience, Required.
Hospital experience preferred, particularly in area\r related to unit specialty.
Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English.
Understanding of medical terminology.
Moderate computer data entry skills.
Ability to use computer applications such as clinical\r information systems (e.g. Clinicians View, Chart View, GE Manager, GE\r Scheduler,, scheduling software, e-mail, intranet, requisitioning systems\r (e.g. Lawson).)
Use of copy equipment and fax machine.
HIPAA policies related to confidentiality.
Completion of unit clerk course, Preferred.
