Job Duties

The attorney will provide representation and a wide variety of legal services to Christopher Newport University. Located in Newport News, Virginia, Christopher Newport is a primarily undergraduate and residential institution of 4500 - 5000 undergraduate students. It also offers several Masters level programs, and maintains a highly successful Division III Athletics program.

This position will be located on the campus of Christopher Newport University. It is anticipated that the attorney will handle a broad range of legal matters, serving all divisions of the University. Serving as agency counsel requires advising decision-makers throughout the organization on the legal risks and obligations associated with their duties as employees or board members and offering strategies for mitigating legal risk in unexpected circumstances and situations. University Counsel may also represent Christopher Newport in state or federal court, before regulatory bodies, and with third parties in pre-litigation and transactional matters. Additionally, this individual will provide other legal services to the Commonwealth as directed by the Office of the Attorney General.

Minimum Qualifications
  • The successful candidate will have excellent analytical abilities and written and oral communication skills and be able to respond to legal requests in a timely fashion.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills are also required.
  • High level organizational skills and an ability to manage many projects simultaneously and work under pressure are required.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with experience in the representation public institutions of higher education.
  • Admission to the Virginia Bar is required before beginning employment.
  • Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
