St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners is seeking a Utility Maintenance Technician Trainee for our well established Utility Department whose headquarters are located in beautiful St. Augustine, Florida.

The St. Johns County Utility Department is responsible for reading, billing and collection of approximately 50,000 service connections, approximately 400 lift stations, 200 step tanks, 15 water and wastewater plants along with several wells and booster stations. It also administers and coordinates utility status management reporting, reviews engineering drawings, construction management and performs inspections and surveys for new construction just to name a few!

Employees work in a team environment with two common goals in mind: to provide the best services to our citizens and to be the best public utility in North Florida. The Utility Maintenance Technician Trainee is dynamic and fast paced. Technicians work Monday through Thursday from 7:00 am to 4:30 pm and Fridays from 7:00 am to 11:00 am with a ½ hour lunch break. St. Johns County Utility Department utilizes City Works asset maintenance software which collects data and maintenance record keeping.

The newly selected Utility Maintenance Technician Trainee will work together as a team to maintain sewer lift stations, water and wastewater facilities, wells, and step tanks. The Utility Department will provide training in safety, mechanical and electrical systems. The Utility Department will provide CDL training and a road test once you receive a permit. St. Johns County Utility Department will provide a 40 hour course and test to receive a FWPCOA collection certificate.

The ideal Utility Maintenance Technician Trainee candidate must possess St. Johns County core values of compassion, innovation, and trustworthiness and must work well in a collaborative team environment. Some of the specific task include but are not limited to:
  • Assist in the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of electrical systems at treatment plants and lift stations.
  • Assist in installing, maintaining and repairing pumps and mechanical equipment at plants and lift stations.
  • Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Responds to emergency calls.
  • Completes work orders.
  • Assist in the repair of broken water and sewer lines.
  • Assist in operation of pump truck, crane truck, and vacuum truck.
  • Perform general ground keeping at Utility sites (trimming grass, shrubs, pressure washing, painting).
  • Maintains full time presence on the job.
  • Performs other assigned duties.
Candidates for the Utility Maintenance Technician Trainee are encouraged to apply if they meet the following minimum qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent recognized certification.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License and any other endorsements necessary to legally operate vehicles used while assigned to this position.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida class B "CDL" driver's license with "N" (tanker endorsement within six (6) months from date of hire.
  • Must possess good interpersonal and communication skills in order to serve others.
  • Must be able to comprehend, speak and write the English language.
  • Must be able to operate a computer.
