The Division of Adult Institutions is currently recruiting for a Utility Plant Operator vacancy located at Waupun Correctional Institution in Waupun, WI.

Position Summary
This position is responsible for the daily on-site technical management of the waterworks facilities. Under general supervision of the Power Plant Superintendent, this position performs mechanical maintenance and repair on a wide variety of equipment throughout the facility, as directed; independently operates, monitors, tests and maintains institution utilities; performs waterworks plant operation duties; and performs other collateral duties.
Salary Information
The starting pay is $26.55 per hour plus excellent benefits. Pay on appointment may vary according to the applicable pay transaction provisions of the Compensation Plan and Wisconsin Administrative Code. The pay schedule/range is 03-15. A 12-month probationary period will be required.
Candidates with no prior permanent employment with the State of Wisconsin in the past 5 years may be eligible to accept a sign-on bonus of $2,000. The sign-on bonus will be paid in two installments: $1000 on the first paycheck and $1000 with the paycheck for the pay period in which the employee attains permanent status/completes their probation.
To receive the bonus, a candidate must sign an agreement indicating they will remain in that position for a year. If the candidate leaves their position prior to completing the one year, they may be required to reimburse the initial payment.
Job Details
Applicants must be legally entitled to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without DOC sponsorship) at the time of application. The Department of Corrections will conduct criminal background checks on applicants prior to selection to determine whether the circumstances of any conviction may be related to the job being filled. Upon hire, all new DOC employees are subject to fingerprinting.
The Department of Corrections may conduct pre-employment drug screens. Any applicant who is offered employment in a position which requires a pre-employment drug screen must pass the screen as a contingency to employment. Applicants who fail or refuse the drug screen will not be given further consideration for employment.
Qualifications
Minimally qualified applicants will meet the below criteria:
1. Within 12 months of appointment, must possess Distribution (D), Groundwater (G), Iron Removal (I), and Zeolite Softening (Z) Waterworks Operator-in-Training certification.
2. Within 24 months of appointment, must possess Distribution (D), Groundwater (G), Iron Removal (I), and Zeolite Softening (Z) Waterworks Grade 1 certification.

- Must be able to work in confined spaces and wear equipment prescribed under Department of Commerce rules on confined spaces. This includes breathing apparatus and safety harness.
- Physical ability to independently perform lifting of up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to work in conditions of extreme heat, cold, dampness and dust.
- Possession of valid Wisconsin Driver's License.
