About the College/Unit/Department

Part of the Division of Student Affairs, University Housing consists of nearly 2.8 million square feet of facilities and is home to more than 9,000 students. The department employs 220 full-time staff members, 21 graduate assistants and 565 undergraduate student workers. As a self-supporting auxiliary, University Housing operates a $59 million budget derived only from student housing fees and other non-state sources.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires at least a high school diploma or equivalent. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

• Five years of experience, vocational training at the journeyman level in one of the applicable trades, or any equivalent combination of training and experience.



Position Summary

The primary function of this employee is to participate in maintenance related activities to develop proficiency in all aspects of skilled trades. This employee will perform a variety of building maintenance tasks in and around various residence halls, including pathways and public areas. This incumbent serves one of six facilities zones, housing between 1,000 - 2,000 residents each.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
  • Perform basic level maintenance tasks independently.
  • Maintain knowledge of standard concepts and practices of the maintenance field and be relied upon to plan and accomplish goals.
  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with staff, residents and various customer groups and demonstrates supportive involvement in work environment.
  • Maintain knowledge of workplace rules and guidelines; stay in compliance with UGA policies and procedures.
  • Be able to prioritize the work load according to urgency.
  • Effectively communicate and collaborate, both verbally and electronically with a wide variety of individuals; such as facilities colleagues, residence hall staff, students and family members.
  • Carry out work assignments with expected degree of independence and efficiency according to skilled craft practices with limited callbacks for additional repair.
  • Safely operate and use various tools associated with the field, e.g. power tools and hand tools.


Physical Demands
  • Climb stairs, ladders and scaffolds; may work from a ladder or scaffold.
  • Bend at the waist and the knees.
  • Work with arms and hands overhead for extended periods of time.
  • Use hand tools and power tools.
  • Lift and move items at least 50 pounds in weight, both assisted and unassisted.
  • Crawl to complete various tasks.
  • May occasionally perform work related duties outdoors in hot or cold weather.
  • Safely operate a UGA state vehicle as necessary.

Basic Repairs
  • Respond to written and verbal work orders requesting service.
  • Participate in maintenance related activities to develop proficiency in all aspects of skilled trades, including, but not limited to:
    • Assist facilities maintenance workers with minor electrical repairs and troubleshooting as needed.
    • Perform filter changes and minor periodical maintenance as needed for equipment related to the day-to-day functions within the residence halls.
    • Assist facilities maintenance workers with drain and plumbing issues that may require an additional person to complete the necessary task.
    • Assist facilities maintenance workers with the replacement of doors and windows and any associated hardware for proper functionality.
    • Assist facilities maintenance workers with the removal and replacement of appliances within resident apartments utilizing hand trucks and associated equipment as needed.
    • Perform touch-up painting in common areas and apartments in a clean and thorough manner when assistance is required.
    • Maintain pathways and exteriors of all buildings by blowing leaves and periodic pressure washing.

Periodic Inspections
  • Inspect fire extinguishers in common areas on a monthly basis, maintaining appropriate documentation.
  • Inspect and clean mechanical rooms and common areas to avoid storage of combustibles and non-related items. Assure that all associated doorways and entrances are accessible.
  • Inspect mechanical rooms and common areas for non-working lighting and replace lamps as needed.

On-Call, Summer Duties, and Miscellaneous Tasks
  • Participates in the required maintenance after hour's on-call program.
  • Performs summer work assignments including implementing special projects and safety inspections and scheduling and overseeing a crew of student/temporary employees during the summer.
  • Other duties consistent with the purpose and scope of this position may be assigned.
