UWCCR AmeriCorps VISTA - CHOC Youth Services Program

Community Housing Opportunities Corporation (CHOC) is an economic and community development organization that promotes healthy communities and opportunities for youth, families, and seniors. Since 1984, CHOC has provided housing to thousands of families and delivered needed services to low-income individuals and families. CHOC firmly believes that quality housing and supportive programs improve the economic status of residents by addressing the comprehensive needs of individuals, improving local economies and addressing the capital needs of neighborhoods. CHOC's Mission is to increase the available supply of affordable housing and to improve the quality of life of very low-, low- and moderate-income households. CHOC's Vision is to work to create equitable communities so that individuals and families become self-sufficient, building strong community foundations. We believe that affordable housing and supportive programs improve the economic status of residents, transform neighborhoods, and stabilize lives. CHOC's Youth Services offers After School Programs that provide activities in a structured setting that fosters learning. Youth participants receive homework assistance, access to computers and technology, and opportunities to develop valuable cognitive skills. Programs foster a learning environment while developing leadership skills and talents in children and youth. Out of school hours are some of the most critical hours in youth development and the Youth Services programs fill that critical gap. Offering after school programs to youth in affordable housing developments removes barriers to participation: accessibility, affordability, and fosters family and community engagement. By offering the programs in their home community, we have the unique opportunity to bridge the home-school relationship and collaboration, which has a positive impact on improving a child's school attendance and affect social-emotional skills and graduation rates.

Member Duties : The VISTA Member will play a vital role in raising the quality of youth programs by developing agency-wide standards and implementing assessment tools that are adaptable to after school programs in CHOC affordable housing communities. The VISTA will work alongside the Program Manager and collaborate with Youth Coordinators. The VISTA will help create a curriculum that will provide structure, consistency and the ability to be recreated across the sites. The VISTA will help with the creation and implementation of measurement tools that will produce methods to collect data on the youth program outcomes. For program sustainability, the VISTA will assist the Program Manager in Volunteer Recruitment, network and collaborate to seek donations of supplies, and identify grant opportunities for staff sustainability.
