The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

The Variable Hours Officer - Registered Nurse will function in the setting of the Vascular Surgery Division and manage pre- and post-operative patients. The incumbent will be responsible for providing clinical care services; including assessing, diagnosing, prescribing, treating, and educating patients. Works closely with other clinicians in a team approach to patient care.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and participate in the overall medical and surgical management of patients being evaluated and treated by the Thoracic surgery program
  • The RN will render direct patient care, including but not limited to: obtaining patient's history, performing physical examinations, triaging patient's requests and calls in both the pre and postoperative setting, review patient's charts prior to surgery and bring to attending physicians attention an deviations from normal.
  • Discuss cases with the attending and other health professionals to prepare a comprehensive patient care plan
  • Assist the attending physician on any procedure falling within the RN's scope of practice. Perform therapeutic procedures, such as suture removal and chest tube removal, in accordance with training.
  • Develop and provide patient education and discharge instructions, including ongoing efforts to further streamline a pre- and post-operative education program that fosters patient care, research, quality and education under the supervision of the Vascular Surgery attending surgeons
  • Evaluate test findings; make initial medical diagnosis and initial therapeutic plan consistent with the continuing healthcare needs of the patient.
  • Initiate and document in the patient care chart and medical orders all other appropriate orders based on patient's condition and progress.
  • Ensure that patient's referral process and transition into specialty services are timely and efficient
  • Anticipate patient and family needs throughout the continuum of care, communicate and facilitate ongoing care with multidisciplinary team members, departments, primary care practices and community clinical organizations
  • Provide and reinforce patient and family teaching as needed. Participate in professional development activities to keep current with trends and practices in health care administration. Represent the organization at public professional meeting and conferences as requested
  • Responsible for the initiation of initial and subsequent office evaluation of patients referred to the division, assess patients for postoperative visits, based on the established practice of the surgeons and coordinate multidisciplinary care of patients with other specialties as required
  • Coordinate inpatient and outpatient care.
  • All other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in education and 4yrs related experience.
  • NYS RN License
  • Intermediate to advanced level MS Office skills
