Job Responsibilities

Performs skilled mechanical repairs and maintenance to motors, transmissions, brakes, cooling and electrical systems on automotive and heavy equipment. Handles service calls on the road for repair to road equipment. Uses on-line electronic service repair manuals to troubleshoot equipment. Acquires special parts and services by using telephone and internet. Performs service and repair work on small engines, such as chain saws, generators, and pumps. Maintains inventory of oil and hydraulic oil and makes sure that storage room is kept in compliance with OSHA regulations. Performs preventive maintenance inspections on vehicles and equipment. Coordinates scheduled services and repairs with maintenance foremen. Assists in emergency operations which may require 12 hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

One and one-half (1.5) years of work experience that involved the independent performance of job duties directly related to the area of employment; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Completion of one (1) academic year of a South Carolina High School Automotive Technology or Diesel Engine curriculum may substitute for six (6) months of directly-related experience. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, driving, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires working in a large garage setting and may perform duties in an uncomfortable position for long periods of time. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
