The Laboratory Animal Resources (LAR) department seeks to fill the Veterinary Technician position.

Responsibilities

This position is responsible for clinical duty with veterinarians. Independently assesses sick and injured animals. Uses judgment to determine which animals require veterinarian attention, those that may require euthanasia, and those with conditions that may be aided by routine treatments. Maintains accurate and complete records detailing all assessments, treatments, and case resolution.

Exercises judgment to anticipate routine treatments and diagnostics and prepare the animal(s) and needed equipment and/or supplies.

Initiates and implements nursing care for animals. Observes animals under care frequently. Responsible for follow-up on all ongoing treatments. Responsible for communication with veterinarians regarding case management and resolution.

Performs rounds in animal facilities. Notifies veterinarians of findings that may compromise animal welfare or regulatory standards. Works with veterinarians and research personnel to monitor endpoint progression.

Monitors animals with behavioral abnormalities, and with veterinarians, recommends interventions to research personnel.

Participates in clinical problem-solving with veterinarians. Attends weekly Table-Top and Grand Rounds.

Essential personnel for emergency response. Rotates after-hours, weekend, and holiday coverage with veterinarians.
  • Works to establish and maintain collegial, productive relationships with all constituents within the FSU Animal Care and Use Program.
  • Participates in continuing oversight of approved animal activities, including but not limited to observations of post-surgical animals and readiness rounds visits to investigator laboratories
  • Provides technical expertise and instruction in animal care and use to LAR and research personnel.
  • Responsible for coordinating and providing monthly, program-wide training opportunities for research personnel in animal biomethodology and assisting with the instructional needs for the Principles of Animal Experimentation course.
  • Schedules and provides fee-for-service technical assistance to research personnel for animal-related procedures.
  • Attends local, regional, or national meetings to remain current with laboratory animal medicine and care and to promote teamwork and growth in LAR.
  • Coordinates and executes the campus-wide colony animal health monitoring program under the supervision of LAR veterinarians.
  • Oversees and manages the rodent import/export program.
  • Other duties as assigned necessary for the successful operation of LAR and maintenance of an exemplary program of veterinary care
  • Monitors drugs and medical supplies. Discards outdated materials and restocks supplies to ensure ready availability.
  • Maintains an accurate inventory and record of drugs. Understands and follows regulatory guidelines regarding the purchase, storage, and dispensing of substances for clinical use.
  • Dispenses non-controlled drugs to research personnel as directed.
  • Monitors and maintains the cleanliness and orderliness of LAR-maintained procedure rooms.
  • Operates LAR-maintained autoclaves to sterilize surgical or experimental equipment.

Qualifications

An Associate or Bachelors degree from an AVMA-accredited program with 1-3 years of experience.

Must have passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam and be credentialed in Florida as a Certified Veterinary Technician within 6 months of hire.
