Position Summary:

The Vice President, Patient Care Services for the Central Region is responsible for the quality of patient care and provides leadership, planning, coordination, direction, and evaluation of operations in all areas of responsibility. Their operational oversight extends from ensuring safe and appropriate staffing, to safe patient throughput, within a high-reliability and safe organization while overseeing the fiduciary responsibility of a large patient care operations budget. The Vice President is a member of the regional executive leadership team and facilitates the achievement of system's mission and goals for the Central Region. Vice President will also have a dotted reporting relationship to the System Chief Nursing Office and will be an integral and active critical member of their cabinet. As a key leader, this position offers multiple opportunities to have significant impact regionally and across Hartford HealthCare.
The Vice President will create and maintain strong communication channels among nursing, medical staff, administration and professional/technical/support departments to create a balanced, integrated, collaborative environment which fosters a culture that is receptive to the changes in healthcare. The Vice President, serving as the top clinical decision maker for the Central Region in partnership with the Vice President of Medical Affairs, is the ambassador for Nursing and the hospital continuing the high-profile image of a progressive institution providing quality care and service based on professionalism and respect. The Vice President represents the Central Region nursing practice at multiple locations and across a multitude of specialties/areas of focus.
Key Accountabilities:
  • Maintains regulatory readiness with the Patient Care Operations Division for The JC and DPH, inclusive of licensure oversight of the competency and skill of the Registered Nurses and Patient Care Technicians
  • Collaborates and participates with the five key performance indicators within system-wide Nursing Cabinet under the direction of the System CNO: Journey to The Center for Nursing excellence; Culture of Quality, Safety, and High Reliability; Work Optimization; Harmonization of fiscal responsibility; and Workforce Engagement/Culture/Stabilization.
  • Formulates long-range objectives, plans, and programs for the Department of Nursing, and other departments for which administratively responsible, integrating those with overall hospital objectives and plans
  • Develops short-range goals for the Department of Nursing and other departments for which administratively responsible, and establishes budgetary guidelines by which goals can be achieved
  • Participates with the governing body, management, medical staff, and clinical leaders in organizational decision-making structures and procedures. Establishes mechanism for collaboration between nursing and medical staff
  • Evaluates, develops, revises, and implements systems and processes for providing nursing care to enhance patient outcomes
  • Interprets and enforces policies which reflect compliance with the requirements of all applicable regulatory/accrediting agencies
  • Promotes nursing research studies to disseminate and utilize findings in professional nursing practice to improve quality, cost and patient/population outcomes in the patient care delivery model
  • Participates in the evaluation, selection and integration of health care technology and information management systems that support patient care needs and the efficient utilization of resources
  • Defines core strategies for recruitment and retention of professional nursing and patient care staff to attract and retain high-performing employees. Serves as a professional role model and mentor to motivate, develop, recruit, and retain future nurse administrators
  • Provides leadership in the determination of clinical and administrative nursing goals and objectives
  • Provides leadership in the development, implementation and evaluation of programs to promote educational development and advancement of nurses and ancillary staff to ensure high standards of practice
  • Ensures effective ongoing performance improvement activities internally and across the continuum of care to assess and improve the quality of nursing care delivered to patients
  • Provides leadership in the establishment and maintenance of systems of clinical and administrative records and reports to satisfy Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations
  • Develops objectives for, and monitors actual departmental performance in the following areas: patient care; patient experience; employee performance; staffing; budget; staff development; managerial development; physician relations; interdepartmental relations; infection prevention
  • Participates in hospital and board committees and in appropriate community and professional activities


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in related field and Master's Degree is required. One degree must be in nursing. Master's in Nursing, Health System's Management, or Public Health preferred. Doctorate of Nursing Practice preferred \
  • Current license in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Connecticut
  • Five plus years of progressive nursing leadership in multiple service lines overseeing the role of nurse manager, unit director, etc. at a VP/Divisional Director level
  • Demonstrated track record as an effective administrator who has created change, ideally in acute care and academic settings
  • Intellectually facile, will have the ability to be conceptually creative, grasp large amounts of information quickly, and articulate conclusions in a clear manner
  • Visible leader with excellent interpersonal communication skills who relates well with all levels of the organization
  • An innovative, creative and forward thinking leader with the proven ability to engage, coach and mentor direct reports, colleagues and other key stakeholders
