The Vice President of Peri-operative Services (VP) is accountable for the overall administrative and strategic leadership, operating results, and cost center financial performance of the clinical operations of Peri-operative Services, including:

• BWH ORs (43 Main + 1 Hybrid + 1 Image Guided)

• BWFH ORs (16)

• Foxborough ORs (4)

• Associated Peri-Operative Service across all sites, including:

o Weiner Center for Pre-Operative Evaluation

o Technician Services

o Support Services/Central Sterilization Service

At the Brigham Sites ~45,000 surgical cases are performed annually. In leading this portfolio, the VP will oversee:

• A senior administrative leadership team, including a Senior Director of CPD & Surgical Supply, a Senior Director of Clinical Support, a Senior Director of Performance Improvement and Outcomes, a Director of Business Operations and Capital Planning, and a Community Operations Director.

• The Associate Nursing Officer (BWH and BWFH) for Peri-operative Services (ACNO) for purposes of operations and administration. The ACNO reports to the Office of the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) for professional matters and clinical responsibilities.

• Medical and surgical directors for Peri-operative Services for purposes of operations and administration within the units. The medical and surgical directors report to the Office of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) clinical responsibilities related to and within the units.

The VP reports to the Senior Vice President of Hospital Operations across the Brigham Sites (SVP). Due to the senior level of this position, the VP also regularly communicates with, prepares materials for, receives direction from, and provides counsel to the Chief Operating Officer, the Chief Medical Officer, the Chief Nursing Officer, the Department Chairs, and other senior leaders of other departments and the hospital. The scope of this senior management role spans the Brigham Sites.

Responsibilities:

Leadership

• Under the general guidance of the SVP, and in alignment and collaboration with the Peri-operative Leadership Group (PLG), determines the overall direction, goals, tactics, and objectives of Peri-operative Services. Works with the SVP to establish and achieve long range goals and ensures the implementation of strategic business plans that are aligned with the vision, strategic plans, and goals of the institution.

• Serves as the Chair of the Peri-operative Leadership Group (PLG).

• Serve as a critical leader in the organization's Enterprise Asset Management efforts - leading performance improvement initiatives, presenting data and trends, and working to optimize volume, utilization, and year-over-year performance.

• Is visible and available to staff and colleagues, particularly in the operating room and peri-operative locations, as a leader for Peri-Operative Services and fosters a culture of inclusivity and collaboration.

• Continuously assesses and improves the efficiency of systems and processes across Peri-operative Services.

• Ensures healthy and collaborative relationships among the faculty and staff within Peri-operative Services, and with the hospital and related departments.

• Collaborates with the offices of other hospital SVPs on issues related to multi-disciplinary peri-operative operations and services delivery.

• Works with counterparts at Massachusetts General Hospital and other hospitals across MGB to support greater consistency and coordination of Peri-operative Services across the system.

• Demonstrates strong emotional intelligence with the ability to understand, manage, and positively influence relationships and prioritizes building a positive, supportive, and engaging workplace environment, aligning team dynamics with organizational values.

• Develops and implements policies and procedures consonant with the hospital's policies. Assesses administrative and financial needs of the department and revises policies and procedures to meet changing needs.

o Evaluates, initiates, and implements various systems and procedures, and revises as necessary to maximize efficiency.

o Serves as a resource for resolution of administrative and operational questions, issues, and problems.

o Works with management staff and representatives from other departments to evaluate, initiate, and implement systems and procedures and revises as necessary to improve and maximize efficiency.

• Develops effective, clear, and precise methods of communicating with the SVP, and with hospital and physician leaders, clinical faculty, and staff on a regular basis.

• Keep current regarding trends and developments in the health care field, particularly when they pertain to strategic planning, analytic and decision support tools, financial trends, evolving technologies and programs.

Service Management

• In partnership with physician, nursing, and operational leadership at each site, supports the provision of harmonious, collaborative, safe and high-quality care and the timely and efficient use of surgical assets across the Brigham entities.

• Reviews the ongoing management of Peri-operative Services, discusses and resolves any administrative problems that arise, and directs the planning of improvements in existing clinical services.

• Capacity

o Manages the OR block review and allocation process across the Brigham Sites in collaboration with the Peri-operative Leadership Group.

o In alignment with PLG:

    1. Analyzes data to understand the drivers of capacity; uses formulas and modeling to impact more efficient patient throughput.
    2. Optimizes value by encouraging use of data to drive decisions, depersonalizing processes, and allowing clinical and administrative staff to actively engage in process improvement activities that reduce cost and improve revenue.
    3. Encourages and supports implementation of process improvement pilots where the goal is effective management of patient capacity.
    4. Implements novel strategies to centralize all different entry modes to the inpatient and ED environments that impact throughput in operative areas.
    5. Facilitates the effective coordination of patient placement to optimize the patient experience while assuring efficient patient throughput.


• Quality & Compliance

o Works in concert with the medical and surgical directors and the ACNO to maintain the highest quality and safety standards.

o Co-leads, with the medical and surgical directors and ACNO, interdisciplinary initiatives with nursing, clinical support services, clinical faculty, and ancillary services to ensure safe, predictable, efficient, and effective delivery of Peri-operative Services.

o In collaboration with an interdisciplinary group of hospital, physician, and nursing leaders, directs the development and implementation of process improvement initiatives aimed at improving patient safety and compliance across the continuum of care.

o Assures compliance with BWH/BWFH, MGB, TJC, OSHA, DPH and state and federal regulations.

o Partners with the appropriate compliance offices for audits as needed and/or directed.

• Partners with clinical and administrative leaders to identify, prioritize, implement, and monitor progress of information system enhancements and upgrades, as well as new system introductions.

Capital Management

• In collaboration with the SVP, oversees all physical space that is part of the Brigham's surgical enterprise.

• Takes a leadership role in planning and space allocation for all current and future surgical assets across the Brigham Sites.

• Oversees vendor relationships for Peri-operative Services.

• Partners with the SVP for all capital planning relative to Peri-operative Services.

• Oversees device utilization planning and product approval processes for Peri-operative Services.

Financial Management

• Fiscal Management

o Responsible for the cost center fiscal management of all areas of responsibility.

o Establishes and achieves financial goals and measures, monitors, and ensures the on-going financial performance of Peri-operative Services.

o Facilitates effective cost containment practices through monitoring of volume trends, proactive management of capacity (physical and human resource), supplies, service contracts, and professional services agreements.

o Oversees expense management issues; performs comparative analyses; develops and implements strategies for cost containment.

• Analysis & Reporting

o Examines, analyzes, and interprets financial reports for the purpose of giving advice, preparing statements and projections, and ultimately managing resources.

o In partnership with the SVP, prepares analyses and forecasting for introduction of new programs/services.

o Understands and meets all financial reporting requirements in the prescribed format, per the direction of the SVP and the applicable budget office.

• Budgeting

o Partners with the SVP and the departments to prepare annual hospital budgets in the prescribed format for the responsible areas of Peri-operative Services. Presents and justifies budget requests to the SVP.

• Oversight

o Supervises the activities of subordinates who are responsible for being familiar with and approving all expenditures, assigning cost centers, monitoring compliance with budgets, and identifying and investigating potential problem areas and proposing solutions.

o Ensures the highest standards of integrity, ethics, control, and confidentiality are maintained across all financial and accounting matters.

System Engagement

    • Where and as possible, ensures coordination and alignment in policy and approach with Massachusetts General Hospital Peri-operative Services.
    • Consults with surgical leaders across Mass General Brigham to advise on operational policies and practices.
    • Supports implementation of Enterprise Asset Management across the system. As a role model and teacher to others, actively participates in rationalizing where care is delivered, and supporting the development of predictive capabilities.
    • Assumes a seat and senior leadership role on the Mass General Brigham Procedural Product and Technology (PP&T) Steering Committee and the related Sustain committees.
    • As a part of Mass General Brigham initiatives, leads standardization efforts aimed at cost savings, efficiency, and best practices for patient care.


Human Resources Management

  • Management Actions
    • Coordinate with Human Resources for the interviewing, hiring, personnel transactions (hiring, salaries, promotions, job descriptions, etc.) and implementation of institutional corrective action policy for staff.
    • Using organizational management systems, initiates, approves, and coordinates with Human Resources for approval of human resources changes (i.e., salary adjustments, salary distributions, training records, etc.) for staff who reside under the VP.
    • Prepares performance reviews on direct reports.
    • Takes corrective and disciplinary action, up to and including termination, as necessary to maintain the highest level of staff productivity and effectiveness.
  • Oversight
    • Provides direct supervision to and is responsible for the conduct, operations, and results of the professional and non-professional staff.
    • Develops and implements change management programs including efficiency and resource utilization projects.
    • In times of transition, supports areas that require interim leadership support.
  • Development
    • Actively considers opportunities to grow the abilities, skills, and support of employees within Peri-operative Services through professional development, enhanced communication vehicles, employee-focused initiatives, and otherwise.
  • Culture/Equity
    • Reviews, supports, and ensures salary and wage equity for staff.
    • Creates a supportive, educational, and development-focused environment for all staff.
    • Ensures the support and maintenance of a diverse, inclusive, and professional environment for all staff.

Other

  • Oversees general administrative matters within Peri-operative Services.
  • Develops letters, presentations, announcements, and other communications; all documents must be of the highest caliber of refinement and professionalism.
  • Serves as a stand-in for the SVP in relevant meetings when they are not available; serves on committees as needed or assigned.
  • Leads or participates in special projects and performs other related tasks as requested or required.


Qualifications

Qualifications:

• 10+ years of experience as a leader within an academic medical center.

• Demonstrated track record of successfully leading teams.

• Advanced degree required; clinical experience strongly preferred.
