The Department of Philosophy at Virginia Tech invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor position. We are seeking candidates with a commitment to excellence in scholarly research and teaching. The selected individual will have Normative or Applied Ethics as their area(s) of specialization.
The selected candidate will teach six classes per academic year at the undergraduate and graduate level and conduct scholarly research. In addition, the successful candidate will be encouraged to take part in, and contribute to, the intellectual life of the department through participation in departmental talks and events.
In addition to a CV, Cover Letter and List of References please submit a Teaching Statement, Summary of Teaching Evaluation and Writing Sample with your application.
Required Qualifications
Ph.D. in Philosophy by appointment start date. Research specialization in Normative or Applied Ethics, with evidence of research excellence in one or both of these subdisciplines. Evidence of teaching effectiveness to meet teaching needs, especially courses in Normative Ethics (e.g., Morality and Justice) and Applied Ethics (e.g., Philosophy, Sex, and Gender) at the undergraduate levels. Evidence of effectiveness in supporting the academic success of underrepresented and underserved students. The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
Preferred Qualifications
Willingness and ability to work in a high-tech environment, such as computer-aided instruction. Interest and experience working effectively with a diverse student population. Ability and willingness to work collaboratively with faculty from a variety of disciplines. Ability to articulate a coherent agenda of research or scholarship and to identify potential funding sources to support such research. Commitment to excellence in teaching and scholarship.
