Position Overview

The VP, Underwriting Employer Stop Loss, leads, manages, and directs profit/loss accountability for major accounts and key clients. Directs and manages a team performing underwriting and other services. Leads and manages activities using expert-level of marketing and underwriting risk assessment skills and experience; evaluates and classifies employer stop-loss risks/cases. Acts as a primary client contact on Employer Stop Loss and Employer Stop Loss Turnkey programs as well as liaison between Business Development, Actuarial, Account Services, Medical Management and Claims departments. Recommends and participates in the development and implementation of process improvements that may extend beyond the area of oversight. Serves as a key member of the leadership team providing strategic direction and fostering a spirit of cooperation and coordination among all work areas. Responsible to achieve plan and plan growth goals as laid out in the Employer Stop Loss expansion plan.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees and evaluates new business opportunities and develops appropriate underwriting and pricing decisions.
  • Develops and maintains client relationships in conjunction with business development. Takes ownership of the relationship and ensures that clients' objectives are met and gain understanding when the objectives are not feasible.
  • Develops underwriting guidelines and models with associated documentation.
  • Collaborates with actuarial to provide underwriting and product development support.
  • Analyzes monthly results, summarizes findings and reports to senior management.
  • Serves as a member of the Healthcare leadership team, including setting strategic and tactical direction, business unit goals and objectives and development of joint plans to achieve goals and objectives.
  • Coordinates and works with all necessary departments within RGA in the development and support in all aspects of the reinsurance relationship with the client.
  • Provides leadership support in due diligence of Brokers, HMOs, Partners, insurance companies, third party administrators, and other provider related to the business.
  • Leads, manages and directs the activities of department staff and management in all aspects of supervisory duties, including, but not limited to hiring, training, evaluating, coaching, and disciplining direct reports. Fosters a positive and engaged work environment. Mentors associates and gives guidance on associate development.
  • Ability to develop and conduct client sales and underwriting training programs for employer stop loss Turnkey clients.
  • Manages completion of special projects as they arise and performs other duties as assigned.


Requirements

Education and Experience

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Math, Finance, Actuarial Sciences, Statistics, or related field
  • 10+ years of healthcare Employee Stop Loss insurance, underwriting, or actuarial experience
  • 10+ years management and leadership experience

Preferred:
  • Experience working with Employee Benefit Brokers, Health Plans, and TPA's.
  • 15 - 20years of healthcare insurance or reinsurance underwriting or actuarial experience

Skills and Abilities

Required:
  • Expert knowledge healthcare products: particularly employer stop loss and/or small group medical.
  • Intermediate Word, SQL/Query and Excel skills
  • Ability to multi-task and meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to balance detail with departmental goals/objectives
  • Expert oral and written communication and presentation skills, demonstrating the ability to convey business terminology that is meaningful and well received by all stakeholders, including customers and associates.
  • Highly advanced interpersonal skills, demonstrating the ability to work effectively with different disciplines, including pricing, investments, accounting, systems, and administration.
  • Highly advanced project management skills. Demonstrates ability to evaluate project objectives and scope feasibility, gain understanding, schedule resources, and manage budget to plan.
  • Highly advanced ability to analyze and solve complex problems/issues
  • Expert ability to analyze and improve business processes
  • Expert ability in translating business needs and problems into viable accepted solutions
  • Expert ability to make timely and effective decisions and produce results through strategic planning and implementation of programs and policies.
  • Advanced knowledge of medical pricing models, principles, and structures
  • Advanced knowledge of underwriting, claims, and product features of medical products and how they interact with pricing.
  • Highly advanced ability to bring an integrated perspective on issues that relate to business development, strategy, organization, and operations.
  • Ability to work independently and to work well within a team environment and participate in department projects.
  • Ability to travel as required, up to 40% of the time.

Preferred:
  • Expertise in Specific and Aggregate Stop Loss Pricing Systems, Milliman Healthcare Cost Guidelines and/or other WSP Actuarial Cost Model.
  • Expert in using David Young or related front end ESL system.

The general pay range for this position is $143,245-$200,00 per year. Base pay varies depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and market location. In addition, RGA provides an annual bonus plan that includes all roles, and some positions are eligible for participation in our long-term equity incentive plan. RGA maintains a full range of health, retirement, and other employee benefits.
