Role Overview:

We are seeking an experienced and visionary Senior Director of Rights and Licensing to lead and drive our global rights management strategy. In this key leadership role, you will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of rights acquisition, management, and licensing across multiple platforms. You will audit existing practices, ensure alignment with industry best practices, and spearhead initiatives to optimize our rights portfolio and maximize revenue opportunities. The ideal candidate will have deep experience in rights and licensing within the research and publishing industry, a strong strategic mindset, and a proven ability to lead and collaborate with cross-functional teams.

How you will make an impact:

Strategic Leadership: Develop and lead a comprehensive rights and licensing strategy that aligns with the company's overall objectives and growth plans and working closely with our Editorial and Sales functions

Audit and Compliance: Conduct thorough reviews and audits of existing rights management practices to ensure compliance with legal standards, internal policies, and industry best practices. Examples include Wiley's IP portfolio, current practices of rights recording and tracking from acquisition (books, authors, editors, contributors, journal authors, and societies and third-party permissioned material used in Wiley books, journals and other content).

Optimization of Rights Portfolio: Identify content for new licensing opportunities, optimizing the existing portfolio to maximize revenue and strategic value in support of Wiley's sales teams.

Industry Best Practices: Stay ahead of industry trends including rights management workflows and intellectual property management systems, emerging markets, and technological advancements; integrate these insights into the rights and licensing strategy.

Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with editorial, legal, finance, marketing, sales, and digital teams to ensure cohesive and effective execution of rights and licensing strategies. Strong collaboration with rights acquisition and licensing teams, along with leads for technical system and workflows.

Data Analysis and Reporting: Oversee the development of robust data analytics capabilities to track, monitor, and report on rights performance metrics; provide actionable insights and recommendations to senior leadership.

Policy Development: Develop and implement policies and guidelines that reflect best practices in rights and licensing management within the research and publishing sector.

Stakeholder Engagement: Represent the company at industry forums, conferences, and events, building strong relationships with external stakeholders and reinforcing the company's position as a thought leader in rights and licensing.

Develop an end-to-end future state: guidelines for executing on Wiley's rights strategy, workflows, and advising on integrated technology solutions to ensure that rights information is recorded and informs downstream licensing, determine the associated resource needs, and oversee implementation

Promote IP awareness by developing and delivering training on rights management, and build strong collaboration across functional teams - Editorial, Sales, Operations, Technology - with the unified goal of strengthening Wiley's IP rights.

Qualifications:

•8+ years of experience in rights and licensing management, with significant experience in the research or academic publishing sector.

•Proven leadership experience at a senior level, with a track record of successfully driving strategic initiatives and working closely with cross-functional teams.

•Deep understanding of intellectual property law, rights management, and licensing practices specific to the research and publishing industry.

•Strong analytical, negotiation, and communication skills, with the ability to influence at all levels of the organization.

•Experience in reviewing, auditing, and improving existing practices, policies, and procedures to align with industry best practices.

•Knowledge of digital content platforms, Open Access publishing, and emerging trends in the research and publishing landscape.

•Proficiency in rights management databases, contract management tools, and data analytics platforms.

•Ability to think strategically and execute tactically in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
