What You Will Do

The Waste Sampling Program within the Environmental Protection and Compliance's Environmental Stewardship Group (EPC-ES) consists of Waste Sampling Professionals that perform solid and liquid waste and environmental media sampling, spill cleanup confirmation sampling, sample preservation, and facilitate support for sample shipping functions.

Under direction from the Analysis, Prevention, and Reduction Team Leader and Group Management, you will provide sampling and technical support to ensure scientifically valid and legally defensible sample data for waste characterization, verification, and/or certification purposes. This position, while serving as a point of contact for the waste sampling program and working with staff and management throughout the Laboratory, is responsible for processing requests for sampling of waste or environmental media,
planning and executing field sample collection, and maintenance of sampling equipment, containers, chemicals and reagents in a safe and orderly condition. You will also provide defensible compliance documentation and records, such as: field logbooks, sample collection logs/field chain of custody forms, and shipping classification determination checklists. A significant portion of sampling support activities will be conducted outdoors under varying weather conditions.




What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Working knowledge of and experience with waste and/or environmental sampling in compliance with established standard operating procedures, quality assurance procedures, EPA SW-846 and other associated protocols.
  • Working knowledge of and experience with handling, characterizing, packaging, and/or transporting solid, liquid, hazardous (including biohazards), radioactive, high explosives, and/or mixed wastes.
  • Experience and demonstrated skill in the preparation of standard operating procedures, integrated work documents, and/or other safety documents.
  • Working knowledge of records management policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Proven customer service orientation and communication skills sufficient to interface with all levels of staff and managers.
  • Demonstrated analytical and computer skills with advance knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word and Excel).
  • Ability to obtain DOE 'Q' Clearance, which typically requires U.S. Citizenship.


Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Active or transferable Q clearance.
  • Working knowledge of LANL's organizational structure, technical areas, and facilities.
  • Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) certification is desired.
  • Experience working in a radiation area.
  • Working knowledge of general chemistry.
  • Training/Certifications: Trained to the Environmental Protection Agency's analytical protocols in SW-846, "Test Methods for Evaluating Solid Waste: Physical/Chemical Methods" and/or the standard methods and practices of the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM).

Work Environment:


  • General work environment : outdoors, cold environment, hot environment 90 - 100 F, working alone, working extended shifts, operation of motor vehicles, operation of specialized heavy equipment (i.e. forklift).
  • Specific work environment : Work in a noisy environment, work under unusual lighting conditions, work near electrical power supplies, work with biologic or infectious agents, work near sources of ionizing radiation, work near sources of non-ionizing radiation, work with explosives, work with vibrating equipment/machinery, work near machinery with moving parts.
  • Chemical environment : Toxic chemicals, irritant chemicals.


Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
