The City of Hillsboro Water Department has a great opportunity for Water Distribution Operators to join their team. The Hillsboro Water Department operates at a metropolitan scale from a suburban environment, with responsibilities for local water distribution and regional water supply. About This Opportunity
The principal function of an employee in this class is to provide technical, operational and maintenance services related to water distribution operations, instrumentation, and service delivery. As assigned, incumbents conduct water distribution activities; ensure operation of water facilities instrumentation; conduct water analyses; maintain records; and investigate and resolve system deficiencies and complaints.

Pay level is dependent on education and experience. Please see Training and Experience section below for requirements. The following salary ranges reflect annual earnings based on a 40-hour work week. Employees on night shift schedules will receive a 5% pay differential in addition to base bay.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL WORK:
  • Performs taps on water mains, installs new services, relocates water pipes and appurtenances.
  • Identifies and repairs leaks.
  • Performs the installation of water meters and meter testing.
  • Performs Unidirectional Flushing activities.
  • Maintains and operates valves, hydrants.
  • Performs utility locates.
  • Operates and maintains water distribution systems, pumping and storage facilities, services pumps, motors, valves, generators and other related equipment.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on equipment and instruments to ensure efficient operations and accurate readings.
  • Addresses questions, concerns, and complaints from the general public; provides requested information; investigates and takes appropriate measures to resolve issues.
  • Maintains records, reports, logs, and other required documentation in accordance with retention schedules.
  • Monitors and maintains finished water quality to ensure safety and compliance with standards and laws; monitors, maintains and calibrates various instruments; performs water laboratory testing and reviews results.
  • Manage records and information in any format, in accordance with applicable statutes, regulations and City policy, guidance and records retention schedule.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.
  • Performs on-call response duties on consistent schedule.

Current Upcoming Projects
  • Hillsboro is a partner in Willamette Water Supply, a regional water system which is slated to come online in 2026.
  • Hillsboro Operations is operating a unidirectional flushing program in preparation for integrating Willamette Water Supply with our system.
  • Lead and Copper Rule Revision Compliance.
  • Implementing the Asset Management Program.
  • Interim assignment to water utility locating.


ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Associate's degree in chemistry, biology, water, wastewater technology, or related field and
2 years of experience as a Water Distribution Operator; or an equivalent combination of education and experience in utility maintenance/construction sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.

Licenses and Certifications
  • Oregon Water Distribution Operator I or the ability to obtain one within 12 months of hire.
  • Valid Driver's License and safe driving record.
  • Class A CDL with Tanker endorsement or the ability to obtain one within 12 months of hire.
  • On Call Scheduled Rotation is a requirement for this position.

Preferred Training and Certifications

  • Oregon Water Distribution Certification (I - IV)
  • FEMA/ICS 100, 200, 700
  • Traffic Control Certification
  • OSHA Competent Person Certification
  • Trimet Track Access
  • Forklift Certification
  • First Aid/AED Certified

  • Water Distribution system Main and Service lines, including Valves, Hydrants, and Meters, Flushing, Reservoirs.
