Overview

The waterfront organization is a dynamic, practical, and growing team supporting the United States Navy $22 billion contract of VIRGINIA Class submarines. The engineer will not be designing the future submarine but will be ensuring the as-built condition of its current war fighter is of the quality standard required to perform its imminent undersea mission.

Waterfront Non-Nuclear Structural Engineering has a need for an experienced structural engineer in the discipline of submarine pressure hull, non-pressure hull, external, or internal structures. The ideal candidate will have knowledge in a wide variety of submarine structures, including: pressure hull, non-pressure hull, external structures, bulkheads, tanks, component foundations, decking, furniture, and lockers. The job consists of a work split between trouble shooting construction issues in the shipyard and technically evaluating these conditions via calculations and analysis on site at the Groton office. Support is provided for submarines in construction at the Electric Boat shipyards in Groton and Quonset Point, Newport News shipyard in Virginia, and various vendors across the United States.

Engineers work together in a fast-paced, time sensitive, team environment utilizing their skills in statics, dynamics, strength of materials, material science, and creative problem solving to provide technical direction in support of emergent issues. Clear communication skills are essential as the engineer will have regular interaction with our customers, both externally (NAVSEA) and internally (shipyard trades in Groton, Quonset Point, and Newport News).

Specific tasks of a D450 Engineer include, but are not limited to:
  • Writing technical dispositions to support issuance of ERs
  • Evaluating design changes, including performance of calculations when necessary, to ensure compliance with specs, standards, etc.
  • Interacting and collaborating with design counterparts

  • A desire to work as part of a team in a fast paced environment.
  • A desire to work in the shipyard as well as perform analysis as needed.
  • A desire to mentor junior engineers.
  • Leadership experience.
