Central Virginia Community College is located in Lynchburg, Virginia, in view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. CVCC is a comprehensive two-year institution of higher education with an enrollment of approximately 5,000 students in occupational/technical programs and university-parallel/college transfer programs.

Central Virginia Community College is recruiting for a workforce adjunct instructor to design and teach the new FastForward Virginia Certified Horticulturist Program. Instructors must have experience in plant cultivation and landscape design.

The Virginia Certified Horticulturist Program Adjunct Instructors are responsible for, but not limited to, teaching, and developing curriculum/course material for the courses and offering student support through interaction.
  • Update and refine course curriculum and course materials of the Virginia Certified Horticulturist Program to meet learning outcomes and promote students' active participation in learning.
  • Collaborate with other educators and industry experts to enhance the horticulture curriculum.
  • Recommend program equipment, supplies, materials, textbooks, and other items for purchase and use, monitor the safety and quality of instructional materials.
  • Develop and implement engaging lesson plans on horticulture topics to include, but not limited to:
    • Gardening techniques, landscape design, and greenhouse management.
    • Principles of plant science include plant growth, development, nutrition, pests and diseases, fertilizers, and soil management.
    • Basic tools for landscaping, hardscaping, and greenhouse management.
    • Irrigation basics.
    • Pesticide application and safety.
    • Reading plans.
    • Green Industry.
    • Current industry trend.
    • Customer Service, Leadership, and Career Readiness.
  • Foster a safe and organized environment that respects the diversity of people and ideas by modeling respect for all students and conveying confidence in every student's ability to learn.
  • Employ a variety of formative and summative assessments to ensure that classroom instruction leads to student learning and the attainment of the student learning outcomes for the course.
  • Use technology effectively to communicate with students and colleagues, teach online as needed, and enhance classroom learning as appropriate.
• Organize and oversee horticulture projects, field trips, and other experiential learning
opportunities in collaboration with regional employers and industry partners.
  • Assessing students' understanding and performance and providing constructive feedback.
  • Advising and mentoring students on their career paths in horticulture.
  • Assign grades.
  • Stay up to date with the latest developments in the field of horticulture.
  • Ensure all teaching material and methods comply with the education regulations and policies.
Minimum Qualifications:

Current Virginia Certified Horticulturist certification, Certified Professional Horticulturist, Associate Professional Horticulturist, or Practicing Professional Horticulturist required within six months of employment.
Current Registered Technician Pesticide Applicator's License, Virginia Certified Fertilizer Applicator Training, and Proven Winners Certified Garden Center Training required within no later than six months of employment.
Demonstrated knowledge of the field relevant to plant basics, soils, plant propagation, edging and mulching, seed and sod and erosion control, plant and insect disease, pesticides, equipment, pruning, irrigation, reading plans and using scales, current industry trends, green industry, and leadership.
Mentoring, teaching, and/or training experience.
Effective communication and presentation skills, patience, and the ability to inspire and motivate students.
Maintain active and current license, certifications, and professional development.
Proven technological proficiency, which may include Microsoft Office 365 applications.
The ability to work effectively with a diverse student body, faculty, staff, and industry partners.
Preferred Qualifications:

Education in relevant discipline from an accredited college or university.
Experience supervising, mentoring, training, and/or teaching in the horticulture industry.
Ability to complete training and become proficient with Canvas/Distance Education
