Tax Division Overview:

The Tax Division is responsible for fostering voluntary compliance and narrowing the tax gap by identifying, educating, and auditing non-compliant taxpayers. The Tax Division audits the filed tax returns of businesses and individuals. Tax Division audits include (but are not limited to) returns for corporate excise, sales/use tax, meals tax, rooms occupancy, personal income and special fuels tax.

Description:

This position is a Multistate position with the Department of Revenue and this position is NOT in Massachusetts. This location of the posting is Chicago as the Multistate Bureau maintains an office in Chicago. This position may be designated to report to the Chicago office or based upon the location of the successful candidate, the position may be designated to work remotely from a home office. As part of the Modern Work Place initiative, the agency is adopting a hybrid work model. Hybrid work is a mix of in-office work and telework. If the position is designated to report to the Chicago office, the position will report to the Chicago office some days and work remotely from a home office on other days. Candidates may reside anywhere in the continental US outside of Massachusetts, preferably in areas normally considered part of the Multistate Audit Bureau territory. This position is not a lateral transfer opportunity.

Duties :
  • Reviews and evaluates employee work products and all other aspects related to job performance.
  • Administers, directs and controls the audit activities of a group of tax auditors.
  • Selects and assigns audit cases.
  • Assists in employee development by providing instruction and technical support.
  • Understands/conforms to established administrative practices, tax policy and procedures and ensures that subordinate employees do the same.
  • Creates, reviews and analyzes Departmental system information, production/inventory reports and other available information to evaluate audit activities.
  • Prepares and submits comprehensive reports of group activities.
  • Provides professional customer service to taxpayers, outside professionals and all department employees.
  • Communicates and in writing in clear and comprehensive form.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Applicants should have 8 years of professional auditing or accounting experience.
  • Prior supervisory experience is desirable.
  • Appropriate candidates will have extensive experience with and knowledge of the Massachusetts Sales and Use Tax law, regulations and policy and/or Massachusetts Corporate Excise Tax law, regulations and policy.
  • The ideal candidates will be computer literate, heavily experienced in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and systems used within the Tax Division.
  • Knowledge of statistical sampling methods is needed.
  • Superior written and oral communication skills are a must as are the ability to demonstrate effective leadership and increasing levels of responsibility.


An external candidate recommended for a position with the Department of Revenue will be subject to a background check that includes checks for: state and federal tax compliance; child support compliance; education verification; Massachusetts CORI checks; criminal background checks in state(s) of current and previous residence/employment; validation of eligibility to work in the United States; and national fingerprint-based criminal background checks.
