JOB DESCRIPTION:
Develop and implement instructional programs to support and involve parents and community members in the education process for the purpose of reducing dropouts and increasing the percentage of over age English language learners completing high school. To build academic language and master content in the students' native language in order to diminish deficits due to insufficient years of schooling, while providing English language instruction to create a successful transition back into the mainstream classroom environment. This position is grant funded on a year-to-year basis as part of the Newcomer Secondary ESL Program.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Assist in planning, implementing, and evaluating curriculum, instruction, and assessment programs for students, teachers, and the administration.
  2. Assist in the planning and delivery of staff development opportunities to help raise the level of instructional performance for English Language Learners.
  3. Support appropriate use of technology in the teaching/learning process for students.
  4. Recommend ways in which curriculum and instruction can be adjusted to meet the special learning needs of struggling learners.
  5. Inform teachers and administrators of major trends and developments in instruction, curriculum, and assessment.
  6. Take leadership role in the implementation and revision of curriculum and lesson planning.
  7. Organize intervention planning and remediation for students failing sections of STAAR.
  8. Work with students and provides classroom instruction.
  9. Assist in planning and implementation of systems to manage, report, and communicate assessment data to impact instruction.
  10. Perform casework service with parents to increase the parents' understanding of their constructive participation in resolving their child's problems, as well as their knowledge and use of available and appropriate resources, for the purpose of keeping students in school.
  11. Supervise the referral of students to outside agencies.
  12. Serve as liaison between student, home, school, and community resources, such as family service agencies, child guidance clinics, courts, protective services, doctors, and clergy members. Access and work closely with community agencies to identify resources for student and family support.
  13. Make home visits to gather information relating to students.
  14. Consult with parents, teachers, and other school personnel to determine cause of student problems and effect solutions.
  15. Serve as consultant to school personnel regarding students or situations that are not referred for direct district or outside services.
  16. Develop and maintain effective individual and group relationships with students and parents.
  17. Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other required documents.
  18. Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, and Board policy.
  19. Comply with all District and campus routines and regulations.
  20. Participate in professional development activities to improve skills related to job assignment.
  21. Monitor student attendance daily and contact the parent and student each absence.
  22. Create a caring and supportive environment that teaches students: 1) how to behave appropriately in class; 2) how to manage anger; 3) how to make friends and maintain friendships; 4) how to deal with teasing; receive/give constructive criticism; 5) how to ask for help; 6) how to learn to accept limits.
  23. Communicate the relevance of education to future endeavors, importance of attending school, and setting personal goals.
  24. Work with parents and students to create social/emotional plans (individual intervention plans) that include goals and checkpoints to be reviewed and updated weekly.
  25. Solicit community and parent involvement and support for academic excellence.
  26. Effectively communicate with colleagues, students, and parents.
  27. Maintain confidentiality.
  28. Regular attendance.
  29. Other duties as assigned.

ASSIGNMENTS TO VIRTUAL INSTRUCTION:
  1. Seamlessly integrate District-approved online learning platforms and required software into the planning, delivery, and support of virtual instruction.
  2. Plan, prepare, implement, and evaluate lessons and activities during the standard work hours of the campus at which the teacher is assigned, as well as prolonged or irregular hours.
  3. Be able to communicate with students, parents, and campus and District personnel during the standard work hours of the campus at which the teacher is assigned, as well as prolonged or irregular hours.
  4. Adhere to all professional responsibilities and deadlines including professional communication and responsiveness.
  5. Be flexible, responsive, and positive with students, parents, and staff.
  6. Effectively translate CISD Best Practices into the virtual instructional setting.
  7. Regularly attend and apply District-approved professional development in the most up-to-date practices associated with virtual instruction.
  8. Accurately and timely obtain and report required student data, including attendance, grades, etc.
  9. Dress professionally as you would if you were offering instruction to students in a traditional, in-person setting.
  10. Teach and interact with students from a quiet space, free from distraction, where appropriate confidentiality rules can be followed.
  11. Create a virtual classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  12. Provide small group and tutoring opportunities for students who are experiencing difficulty in their learning.
  13. Support any extracurricular activities for which you are responsible according to District guidelines.
  14. Attend all required campus and District meetings.
EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience as a teacher

  • Experience in public schools

  • Experience in development of curriculum

  • Experience in facilitating and/or working with teams
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification/Licensure:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements for subjects and levels assigned
  • Valid Bilingual certification

Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Knowledge and skills in casework methods
  • Strong consultation skills for conferencing with teachers, parents, and students
  • Knowledge of prevention and intervention strategies, including behavior management interventions and dropout preventions
  • Awareness of and ability to access community resources
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of 4 - 8 curricula
  • Knowledge of second language acquisition methodologies
  • Knowledge of high school credit requirements
  • Working knowledge of curriculum, instruction, and staff development
  • Ability to interpret policy, procedures, data
  • Strong background in content area instruction and assessment
  • Strong knowledge of instructional strategies for English Language Learners
  • Strong knowledge of instructional strategies for students with disabilities
