UVA's Facilities Management (FM) department seeks candidates for multiple openings for Fire Systems Assistant Technicians. FM's Fire and Life Safety Department is responsible for ensuring the safety and reliability of UVA's Fire Protection systems and equipment in Health System, Academic, Housing and Residence Life, and Athletics' entities.

The Fire and Life Safety Team carries out code required inspections, defined maintenance routines, and repair service for all University properties. The Fire Systems Assistant Technician helps the team provide consistent, cost effective, and reliable maintenance and service to the University facilities. This position assists technicians in performing inspections and maintenance of fire detection and suppression systems in public and private buildings. The Assistant Technician assists in preparing and maintaining accurate and detailed records of fire system maintenance and inspections. The Assistant Technician works under direct supervision but is expected to occasionally work independently while performing inspections, maintenance, and some repairs to the fire detection and suppression systems. Assistant Technicians keep students, staff, patients, and visitors safe by assisting in the maintenance of fire protection systems throughout the University.

FM supports the University of Virginia's wide range of research, academic and patient care programs. With over 1,200 employees dedicated to excellence, FM is responsible for the day-to-day operation, repair and maintenance of UVA's buildings, infrastructure and grounds as well as other University-owned and leased properties.

Duties Include:
  • Install and repairs fire system devices and components with guidance from a Fire System Technician.
  • Assist technicians performing fire detection and suppression tests by operating fire system devices per test procedures, monitoring fire alarm panel during testing, and accurately record results.
  • Maintain inspection records, including inventory of fire safety devices and equipment.
  • Ensure the availability, readiness, and proper use of required accident prevention procedures, safety and fire prevention equipment, protective clothing and devices, and first aid supplies.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid Driver's License with zero or positive points balance.
  • Vaccination: A pre-employment health screening is required. This position requires compliance with UVA Health Policy OCH-002 .
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ability to assist in the inspection and assessing of fire systems.
  • Ability to accurately record observations and note violations and present corrective recommendations in a professional manner.
  • Ability to work effectively with building occupants and other authorities having jurisdiction.
  • Knowledge of building fire suppression and detection equipment and systems.

    o Knowledge of electrical and mechanical work practices.

    o Experience performing electrical or mechanical trades.

    o Basic computer skills.

Physical Demands: The employee must be able to variously sit, stand, walk, climb stairs and ladders, crawl, stoop, bend, squat, lift, pull, and use both hands-on repetitive tasks (including overhead tasks). The employee must have normal vision and hearing (correctable), and for some areas of employment, color vision and sense of smell.
