Job Summary

UT Southwestern is in search of a skilled and experienced Maintenance Worker for their Plumbing Shop department. Works under immediate supervision to serve as helper and assist journeyman staff in performance of variety of maintenance and repair work in one or more craft or trade areas, such as apprentice-level plumbing, rough painting, concrete repair, and minor electrical and mechanical repair.

Work Location: Dallas Campus; assist other UT Southwestern campuses when necessary.

Shift Requirement: Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM; some overtime.

Minimum Experience and Education Requirements
  • Requires a minimum 8th grade education. High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Must have and maintain a valid State of Texas driver's license.
  • Two years of work experience in performing a variety of semi-skilled maintenance and repair work preferred.
  • Requires basic knowledge of use and safety with hand tools and power.
  • Plumbing work experience preferred.
  • Plumber Apprentice Registration with the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Work requires the ability to use tools of trade in which work is to be performed.
  • Work requires attention to avoid injury to self and others.
  • Work requires walking, bending, climbing, lifting up to 50 lbs., pulling/pushing equipment up to 50 lbs.
Job Duties
  • Installs and/or repairs locks, door closures and window shades.
  • Performs rough painting, concrete laying, and patch plastering.
  • Assists plumbers by unstopping sinks, commodes, hand basins, and sewer lines.
  • Performs semi-skilled tasks in construction, repair and maintenance of wooden structures and articles.
  • Makes minor repairs and adjustments to electrical equipment and appliances.
  • Assists with the replacement of belts, filters, couplings, gaskets, pulleys, bearings, and motors on a variety of mechanical equipment utilizing the tools of the trade.
  • Assists with the repairs and/or replacement of valves, fittings, pipes, controls, heat exchangers and associated components of steam, chill water, and hot water systems.
  • Makes minor adjustments to equipment such as belt and pulley alignments, coupling alignments and ensuring that mechanical areas are kept clean and tidy.
  • Monitors and maintains equipment daily while performing general maintenance tasks such as corrosion control and painting.
  • Assists other shops with clean-ups and general support as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions
  • Work is performed primarily in an indoor and outdoor hospital and university environments, including clinical, non-clinical, laboratory, classroom, general office, or outside landscape areas.
  • Working conditions involve exposure to one or more disagreeable elements, such as dust, dirt, heat, moisture, cold conditions, and contact with animals, animal odors, lifting, moving heavy equipment, and occasional work where biohazardous, chemicals, or zoonotic diseases will require use of appropriate safety procedures.
Any qualifications to be considered as equivalents in lieu of stated minimum require prior approval of Vice President for Human Resources Administration or his/her designee.
