DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, the Nurse Practitioner provides clinically expert service for Surgical Oncology, HPB, and Endocrine Surgery outpatient practices at Moores Cancer Center and Hillcrest outpatient cancer clinic. Serves as liaison between patients and physicians and clinical staff, assessing and determining the acuity of patient symptoms and communicating these to the physicians as appropriate. Interviews and assesses patients regarding presenting problem to determine and expedite disposition. Assesses and provides Advanced Practitioner functions, as appropriate, for patient care populations based on competence, professional expertise, and knowledge. Assists physicians as required; orders appropriate tests and conveys results to patients, including instructions and lab results, providing health education as needed. Triages all incoming patient calls and electronic messages. Prioritizes and resolves issues, involving Physicians as appropriate. Manages and documents all communications in the electronic medical record system. Incumbent also functions as a provider of patient care for surgical specialties listed above. Provides full clinical support in the management of outpatients. Assists the inpatient team with transitioning patients between outpatient and inpatient settings, including discharge planning and the assessment of new inpatient consults. Plans, implements and evaluates health care treatments for surgery patients. Direct supervision will occur by assigned Attending Surgeons. The position requires a strong emphasis on the complete care of the surgical patient, from pre- to peri- to post-op settings. Position requires special knowledge, skills and abilities in the field of surgery and excellent communication skills.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Must be a graduate from an accredited nurse practitioner program.
• California Registered Nurse (RN) license, California Nurse Practitioner (NP) license, and Furnishing License Certification.
• National NP board certification in aligned specialty with the practice area.
• Current BART, or BLS/CPR certification at time of hire with commitment to get BART within 6 months of hire date.
• Minimum two (2) years of work experience as a licensed Nurse Practitioner in surgical oncology, HPB surgery, or extensive experience with pancreas cancer. Candidates with significant and relevant experience in other surgical specialties may be considered.
• Theoretical background in anatomy, physiology, and general medicine, including basics in pulmonary, emergency and critical care medicine, management of common diseases, concepts of medicine and surgery - in particular cancer, therapeutics, including pharmacology, counseling techniques, and interpersonal dynamics.
• Working knowledge of medical terminology.
• Ability to communicate effectively with patients and other health care personnel, and skill at providing clear written, verbal and telephone communication with a wide variety of people.
• Ability to maintain detailed medical information in an organized and easily retrievable manner.
• Ability to perform various medical procedures, for diagnostic studies and therapeutic modalities.
• Ability to maintain good working relationships and communications with physicians in-charge, laboratory personnel, and members of the health care team.
• Knowledge of medical ethics and law practices, pertaining to medical and medical socioeconomics.
• Knowledge of all types of treatment and modalities necessary for patients care and well-being, and ability to write orders regarding execution of inpatient, outpatient plans of treatment.
• Ability to assess the daily status and progress of patients and report this effectively to the physician in-charge and other medical care personnel associated with the patient.
• Ability perform initial history, and physical examination, identify major medical problems, and formulate appropriate plans of action.
• Ability to analyze and interpret data in a meaningful manner.
• Ability to be trained in the use of specialized medical equipment e.g., tissue perfusion measuring devices.
• Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes, as well as policies, procedures and protocols for patient care management.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

• Must be willing to work flexible, variable hours with the ability to change schedule on short notice.
• Must be able to obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain during employment. Due to advanced practice credentialing eligibility, clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two years gained through school or work experience.
• Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $158,187 - $221,370 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $75.76 - $106.02

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
