Patient Observation: Observe patients for changes in condition or behavior and report any concerns to the nursing staff or healthcare team. Monitor patient safety and ensure a safe and comfortable environment.

Assistance with Procedures: Assist healthcare providers with procedures and treatments, such as wound care, specimen collection, and catheterization. Prepare equipment and supplies as needed and provide assistance during procedures.

Working as a Patient Care Technician at MUSC offers a rewarding opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of patients and contribute to the delivery of exceptional healthcare services within a renowned medical institution.

Physical Requirements:

Mobility: You should be able to move freely and quickly throughout the healthcare facility, including walking, standing, and occasionally running, to respond to patient needs and emergencies promptly. This may involve navigating corridors, stairs, and elevators while transporting patients or equipment.

Lifting and Carrying: PCTs often need to lift and move patients who may require assistance with mobility. You should be able to lift and carry a certain amount of weight safely, following proper body mechanics and utilizing assistive devices such as gait belts or transfer boards to minimize the risk of injury.

Bending and Stooping: You may need to bend, stoop, kneel, or crouch frequently to assist patients with activities of daily living, perform procedures, or retrieve supplies from low shelves or cabinets. Flexibility and agility are essential to maneuver in confined spaces and maintain proper body positioning.

Reaching and Stretching: PCTs may need to reach overhead or across patient beds to access equipment, adjust medical devices, or provide personal care. You should be able to reach, grasp, and manipulate objects effectively without overreaching or straining muscles.

Pushing and Pulling: You may be required to push or pull medical equipment, beds, stretchers, or carts while transporting patients or supplies within the healthcare facility. Proper pushing and pulling techniques, as well as knowledge of equipment operation, are necessary to prevent injuries and ensure patient safety.

Fine Motor Skills: PCTs must possess fine motor skills to perform tasks such as taking accurate measurements, inserting intravenous (IV) lines, administering medications, and operating medical devices with precision and dexterity.

Visual and Auditory Abilities: You should have adequate vision and hearing to observe patient conditions, read equipment displays, interpret vital signs, and communicate effectively with patients and healthcare team members.
