Job Description

Position Summary:
The Patient Care Tech I at MUSC plays a vital role in supporting patient care delivery by assisting nurses and other healthcare providers in various clinical tasks. This position requires compassion, teamwork, and a commitment to providing high-quality care and comfort to patients.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist nurses and other healthcare team members with activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, dressing, toileting, and ambulation, to meet patients' basic needs and promote comfort and hygiene.
  • Take and record vital signs, such as temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiratory rate, accurately and promptly in patients' electronic health records (EHRs).
  • Collect specimens for laboratory testing, such as urine, stool, and sputum samples, following established protocols and ensuring proper labeling and documentation.
  • Assist with patient mobility and transfers, using appropriate lifting and transfer techniques to ensure patient safety and prevent injury.
  • Provide basic wound care and dressing changes under the direction of licensed nursing staff, following aseptic techniques and infection control guidelines.
  • Perform routine tasks, such as stocking supplies, changing bed linens, and maintaining a clean and organized patient environment, to support efficient workflow and infection prevention.
  • Respond to patient call lights promptly and courteously, addressing patient needs and concerns or escalating to nursing staff as appropriate.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, family members, and other healthcare team members, providing information, comfort, and emotional support as needed.
  • Document patient care activities accurately and comprehensively in the EHR, including interventions performed, patient responses, and any changes in condition.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary rounds, care conferences, and other team meetings to contribute to patient care planning and coordination.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift and move patients safely, following proper body mechanics and using assistive devices as needed.
  • Stamina to stand for extended periods and perform tasks that require physical exertion, such as lifting, bending, and reaching.
  • Manual dexterity and fine motor skills to perform tasks such as taking vital signs, inserting catheters, and applying dressings.
  • Visual and auditory acuity necessary to assess patient status, read monitors, and communicate effectively with patients and colleagues.
  • Emotional resilience and the ability to cope with stressful situations, including exposure to patients in pain or distress.
  • Flexibility to work variable shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, as required by departmental needs.

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent required; completion of a certified nursing assistant (CNA) or patient care technician (PCT) program preferred.
Previous experience in a healthcare setting, such as a hospital, nursing home, or rehabilitation facility, preferred but not required.
Basic life support (BLS) certification required
