Collects and processes patient specimens for laboratory testing. Performs special collection and specimen processing procedures.
EducationGreets patients, verifies patient identity, and collects blood specimens using a variety of routine phlebotomy techniques (i.e. venipuncture, heelsticks, fingerstick). Takes all measures to assure patient safety, comfort and satisfaction with the procedure. Assures the integrity of blood specimens for laboratory testing through accurate selection of collection tubes and correct technique; demonstrates good judgement in the selection of the collection procedure/site; assures timely and accurate collection and delivery of blood specimens. Receives specimens and inputs test requests into Cerner based on Invision or physician orders; centrifuges and processes specimens as required. Draws and processes managed care samples according to department protocol Performs special draws from fistulas and grafts as assigned; follows special collection protocol for glucose tolerance tests as assigned. Follows all phlebotomy and department policies and procedures; documents phebotomy and specimen processing procedures and quality assurance problems according to department protocol.
Education
- High School Diploma or GED required
- May require up to 1 year of technical or other specialized training, such as completion of a phlebotomy training program and a specialized training program in fistula/graft draw procedures.
- 0 to 6 months experience required
- Requires the ability to read and write; and knowledge of grammar, and arithmetic including fractions and decimals.
- May require the use of standard office/medical equipment (i.e., typewriter, personal computer, data terminal, on-line printer, calculator, telephone, facsimile, copier, sterilizing equipment, blood pressure cuff, or tables); the preparation, comparison or checking of reports, records and related data; and basic use of formulas, charts, tables, drawings and knowledge of their application.
