Responsible for first-year experience programs, such as the JumpStart Summer Bridge Program and Vaquero Innovators Program ( VIP ). Responsible for all programs functions including budget recommendations, program selection, staff supervision, recommendations for future planning, and innovation. To assist in the operation of this program or multiple projects, exercising independent judgment and authority as required.

Description of Duties
  • Coordinates first-year experience programs, such as Sparks, Vaquero Innovators Program, and the JumpStart Summer Bridge Program to ensure first-year students are given support during their transition into the University and ensures prescribed activities are carried out in accordance with specified objectives.
  • Supervises and manages the day-to-day activities and personnel of the assigned program.
  • Develops and supervises the implementation of multiple projects or programs.
  • Participates in budget planning and is responsible for controlling expenditures in accordance with budget allocations for the program.
  • Plans and coordinates the various activities of the program.
  • Coordinates long and short-term programs (i.e. KickStart to JumpStart, including performing feasibility studies and estimating the cost of the program.
  • Represents department in official functions.
  • Reviews academic records particularly the Texas Success Initiative ( TSI ) College Readiness Standards of incoming students to ensure placement in correct courses. This requires close monitoring and constant review as TSI statuses are everchanging as students continuously submit updated scores and exemptions.
  • Drafts brochures, training materials, letters, meeting agendas, and provides insight and approval for social media posts pertaining to first-year courses, Sparks, the Vaquero Innovators Program, and JumpStart.
  • Coordinates the communication plan for first-year student outreach campaigns to promote timely registration and provide timely updates.
  • Attends meetings, conferences, and seminars related to first-year experience.
  • Responsible for sharing program updates with campus partners and external partners, such as high school counselors, prospective students, and their families and preparing appropriate program reports as requested.
  • Provides ongoing training and development for student employees working with the Vaquero Innovators Program, Sparks, and/or JumpStart.
  • Conducts formal training for first-year faculty involved with the JumpStart Summer Bridge Program and the Vaquero Innovators Program.
  • Develops, cultivates, and maintains positive relationships with first-year faculty, campus partners, such as New Student Orientation, Recruitment, Admissions, and Academic Advising, and external partners, such as high school administrators, staff, and TRiO partners to create processes to streamline the first-year experience for incoming students.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education

Bachelor's degree from an accredited university.

Required Experience
  • Three (3) years of experience performing closely related duties, including program planning/coordination or related experience in the appropriate field of the program, or
  • One (1) year of the required experience with a Master's degree, or
  • Five (5) years of the required experience with an Associate Degree or 60 hours of College Credit, or
  • Seven (7) years of the required experience with a High School Diploma or equivalent.

Working Conditions

Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Normal office or classroom or outside environment. Some travel and weekend work is required. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Particular project or program may require ability to drive a car for local or distant travel for consultation, training, meetings, or on site demonstrations. Must be able to bend, stoop, reach and lift for retrieving/maintaining files and for setting up multimedia equipment. Must be able to move between buildings, offices and classrooms.
