Job Description

The laboratory of James Smyth, Ph.D. at the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute is seeking a Research Assistant Professor in the area of cardiovascular biology and/or virology. Dr. Smyth's research group focuses on the gap junction protein connexin 43, which is essential for action potential propagation in the heart. Employing state-of-the-art super-resolution microscopy, combined with genetic, molecular, and biochemical techniques, the Smyth lab studies cellular mechanisms regulating intercellular communication and how these are altered in cardiac disease states.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in molecular biology (including CRISPR/Cas9), biochemistry, cell culture (preferably induced pluripotent stem cell differentiation and primary cell culture), and high-resolution imaging techniques. Additional areas of expertise favored but not required include any of: live cell imaging, nextgen sequencing, virology, small animal surgery, electrophysiology, and use of Langendorff perfusion apparatus.

The Research Assistant Professor will also be responsible for:
1. Research conceptualization with the guidance of the PI, takes a lead role in the design of experiment methodology and methods for analyzing results of experiments.
2. Research publication preparation of text, tables, and graphical information as appropriate for dissemination in peer-reviewed publications, or presentation at professional conferences or in book chapters.
3. Data analysis of findings from research methods and transforming the results into formats appropriate for dissemination in peer-reviewed publications or conference presentations or in formats that engender further analysis.
4. Grant proposal preparation coordinating with and assisting the PI in the production of text, tables, and graphs to appear in applications in support of proposed research. This includes administration of forms and databases entailed by the grant application process.
5. Research team management and training providing for day-to-day conduct of research procedures and administration of research protocols.|

Required Qualifications

- Ph.D. in Cardiovascular Biology, Cell Biology, Virology, or equivalent.
- Demonstrated record of research excellence as indicated by peer-reviewed publications and presentations.
- Demonstrated postdoctoral training.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience with live cell imaging , nextgen sequencing, virology, small animal surgery, electrophysiology, and use of Langendorff perfusion apparatus.
- Experience mentoring students or other laboratory personnel.
- Experience developing proposals and/or managing extramurally funded programs.
