Job Summary:

The Charge Nurse will possess and have the capabilities to perform all the major duties and critical tasks of a Registered Nurse in the Oncology specialty area. Practice is characterized by predominantly interdependent decision-making. Practice is problem focused, but patient centered in the manner care is provided. Able to manage unexpected or emergency situations that are commonly seen in assigned specialty population. Through the nursing process, the Charge Nurse provides leadership to unit personnel and serves as a professional role model to ensure appropriate patient care, patient teaching, and discharge planning is performed. Serves as a resource for nursing staff. Directs and guides activities of ancillary personnel while maintaining standards of the Texas Nurse Practice Act. Charge Nurse assumes responsibility for the human and fiscal resources available to provide quality, cost-effective patient care

Major Responsibilities/Duties /Critical Tasks :

• Performs technical procedures/skills in the specialty area of oncology which may include the administration of medications and treatments specific to cancer care primarily.
• Will also be expected to be flexible and float to other areas as needed.
• Ensures The Joint Commission (TJC) standards and other regulatory requirements are met. .
• Communicates with medical staff, nursing personnel and all other disciplines concerning the care and well-being of patients.
• Routinely communicates with and reports to the Nurse Manager.
• Provides direction and supervision to both professional and ancillary staff assigned to the unit in providing quality care.
• Ability to delegate tasks appropriate to skills/knowledge of Caregiver and to take corrective action when performance is inappropriate.
• Ability to assist the manager/director to complete performance appraisals and counsel nursing staff.
• Actively participates in staff development.
• Supports and facilitates the UT Health Northeast team concept between individuals, unit staff, and departments.
• Oversees departmental maintenance, supply status & functionality. Ensures unit is stocked and well maintained. Contacts appropriate personnel when problems arise.
• Knowledge and experience in use of supplies and equipment. Ensures unit is a clean and safe environment for patients, family & staff (includes work areas, patient rooms, break room and lobby area.) Ensures hallways are free of clutter
• Accountable for the identification and reduction of unsafe practices that could cause harm to patients.
• Supports and promotes system-wide activities related to adequate hand hygiene and the prevention of healthcare associated infection.
• Other duties as assigned

Accompanying Knowledge/ Skills/Abilities and Competencies
• Knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice to give and evaluate patient care.
• Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations and procedures to administer patient care.
• Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
• Skill in identifying problems and recommending solutions.

Qualifications

Minimum Required Education/Experience:

Graduation from an accredited Registered Nurse program. Five (5) years RN experience in the area of Oncology preferred. At least two (2) years RN experience as a charge nurse or supervisor preferred.

Required Licenses/Certifications:
• Must possess and maintain a current RN license to practice in Texas.
• Must possess and maintain current BLS Certification.
• OCN certification and Chemotherapy/Immunotherapy certificate of added qualification preferred at hire and required within 12 months of eligibility
