Job Summary

The University Hospital Wound Care Clinic provides personalized and advanced care for complex and non-healing wounds, ranging from those caused by diabetes, vascular disease, pressure, and other health conditions. We offer access to a full range of wound healing treatment options, including the latest bioengineered tissue products, private hyperbaric oxygen therapy chambers, laser therapy innovations, and leading-edge minimally invasive surgery.

Job Duties
  • Performs and accurately documents physical, psychosocial, and emotional assessments for all assigned patients.
  • Develops and implements an appropriate plan of care for the patient. Utilizes critical thinking skills in planning and prioritizing nursing care for the assigned patients.
  • Completes accurate and timely documentation of the interventions. Confers with all members of the health care team in a collaborative fashion, sharing information and observations of the patient and/or patient's family in a manner that contributes to optimal patient care.
  • Initiates or maintains actions to assure continuity of safe/effective care for patients between shifts, units and upon discharge.
  • Evaluates implemented interventions and modifies care according to the evaluation. Documents interventions and modifications to the plan of care in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Adheres to appropriate hospital and/or Department of Nursing policies, procedures, clinical pathways and the accepted standards of the Wound, Ostomy, Continence Nursing Board while delivering nursing care to patients.
  • Provides appropriate and timely answers and/or education to patient's and/or patient's families. Completes accurate and timely documentation of all education provided.
  • Provides supervision of and direction to unlicensed assistive personnel and nurses new to the environment. Delegates duties appropriately and within legal parameters.
  • Assumes accountability for all actions in the workplace. Reports errors promptly and takes appropriate follow-up action to rectify the error.
  • Responds to patient's and/or patients family's complaints in an appropriate and effective manner. Reports complaints to the Clinical Nurse Manager or their designee in an accurate and timely manner. Utilizes the chain of command appropriately to resolve patient, operational, or personal work related problems.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities as directed. Completes minatory companies and education modules.
  • Provides education to the community and areas of the hospital that request further information in his/her area of expertise.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Experience and Education
  • Associate Degree in Nursing, One (1) year of RN experience. Specialty areas may have increase experience requirements as dictated by unit or standard of care.
  • Current Texas (or BNE Compact State) license required.
  • Wound Ostomy Continence Nursing Certificate (CWOCN), Wound Care Certification (WCC), Certified Wound Specialist (CWS), or Certified Wound Care Nurse (CWCN) strongly preferred. CWOCN is required within 3 years of hire date.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC).
