Summary

We are seeking a highly qualified individual to fill the position of Tutor II: Psychology Research and Statistics Support Specialist to provide on-demand tutoring to undergraduate psychology students enrolled in PSY 319- Principles of Research Design, PSY 322 - Basic Statistics and Probability, PSY 400- Advanced Topics in Psychology, and PSY 401- Advanced Research Experience. The tutor is responsible for providing online synchronous support sessions for students, assisting them with understanding and applying course concepts (research methodology, APA-style writing and formatting, and statistics in psychological research), and effective studying and learning techniques.

Responsibilities*

  • Direct Tutoring Activities: Conduct online synchronous individual and group tutoring session on-demand
    • Offer availability to meet during evening and weekends.
    • Provide clear explanations, examples, and guidance to enhance students' comprehension and skills.
    • Review and provide constructive feedback on student research proposals and reports (content, organization, and style).
    • Create a position and motivating learning environment to encourage student engagement and success.
  • Proactively contact students via email to offer support, reminders, and additional resources. Foster a responsible and supportive environment by addressing students' questions and concerns promptly.
  • Document tutoring sessions, including topics covered and student progress.
  • Communicate with instructors as needed. Seek continuous improvement via reflection on student and faculty feedback.


Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in psychology or related field.
  • Demonstrated excellence in undergraduate research methodology and statistics courses in the social sciences.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in APA-style.
  • Ability to manage time and appointment schedule.
  • Proficiency with technology and software such as G-Suite (Gmail, Google Drive, Google Meet, etc.), Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), SPSS, and others as required by the content area.
  • Must be available on evening and weekends.


Desired Qualifications*

  • High School or college teaching experience.
  • Skill in teaching to a range of ability levels.
  • Knowledge of tutoring methods.
  • Availability to provide some synchronous support between 9 am - 4 pm.
  • Flexibility to hold some meetings with students on the UM-Flint campus is preferred, but fully remote applicants are encourage to apply as well.
