Position Title: High School Instructional Assistant

Contract: 9 Months

Employment Status : Full-time, On-site

Qualifications:
  • At least 18 years of age
  • High school diploma
  • Obtained an ACT Workkeys Score of 3 or higher in each of these subjects: Business Writing, Applied Math, and Workplace Documents
  • Documentation of at least one of these credentials
    • Completed two years of study (48 hours) at an institution of higher education, or
    • Obtained an associate's (or higher) degree, or
    • Met a rigorous standard of quality and be able to demonstrate, through a formal State or local academic assessment, knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing, and mathematics (or, as appropriate, reading readiness, writing readiness, and mathematics readiness).
  • Related experience working in a school or with children preferred
  • Valid Alabama Substitute Teacher License preferred


Job Goal :To assist the teacher in achieving identified instructional goals

Job Function and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the educational and social development of students under the direction and guidance of teachers
  • Assist in the implementation of Individualized Education Plans and related data collection
  • Assist with accommodation of learning environment and materials
  • Assist with implementation of behavior management plans including data collection
  • Provide personal care assistance
  • Collaborate with all professionals including teachers, counselor, speech therapist, social worker, occupational therapist, and physical therapist
  • Assist classroom teachers with maintaining student records
  • Support students with emotional or behavior concerns and assists them in developing appropriate social skills
  • Assist with extra duties related to the supervision of students - lunch periods, assemblies, field trips, etc.
  • Guide independent study, practice work, and corrective instruction directed by the teacher collecting appropriate data throughout the process
  • Assist the teacher in preparing instructional materials for classroom use
  • Assist with individual and small group remediation and instructional support
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information
  • Work cooperatively with others
  • Work effectively under the direction of others
  • Use instructional technology resources as appropriate for supporting students and assisting teachers
  • Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities


Primary Physical Demands:
  • See on a continuous basis within less than a few feet away and more than a few feet away
  • Hear on a continuous basis within less than a few feet away and more than a few feet away
  • Speak frequently and clearly
  • Transition from various positions: standing, sitting, walking, kneeling or crouching. On a rare occasion it may be necessary to move quickly, walk/run in a drill or emergency situation
  • Reaching, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling objects up to 25 pounds with or without assistance
  • Agility to operate computer and other digital hardware
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers for word processing


Typical Work Environment:
  • Academic and professional for all ages
  • Primarily indoors with varying temperatures
  • Noise level is generally moderate
  • Access to telecommunications
