POSITION: Special Education Instructional Assistant

QUALIFICATIONS:

Must meet Highly Qualified Paraprofessional Status: 48 Semester hours of college coursework OR an Associate's Degree OR passing scores on the WorkKeys assessment (Business Writing, Applied Math, Workplace Documents)

Alabama bus driver certification/CDL (Commercial Driver License) preferred

REPORTS TO: Principal and Special Education Coordinator

JOB GOAL: To assist the teachers in attaining instructional goals established in the school system and in students' individual education plans.

Essential Functions:

1. To assist student(s) with positioning, toileting, feeding, therapeutic exercises and other needed services.
2. Work with individuals or small groups to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
3. Assist the teacher in implementing special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on the teacher's understanding of individual students, their needs, interests and abilities.
4. Assist with independent study, drill, remedial and makeup work in accordance with standards assigned by the teacher.
5. Assist the teacher in administering, scoring and recording diagnostic and assessment tests for individuals and small groups.
6. Assist in distributing, collecting and correcting student work.
7. Assist the teacher by providing reading intervention to individuals and/or small groups.
8. Assist teachers in preparing instructional materials for classroom use.
9. Become proficient in operating and maintaining such equipment as a laminating machine, copier and any other equipment necessary to preparing instructional materials.
10. Construct bulletin boards/classroom learning displays as prescribed by the teacher.
11. Assist any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.
12. Maintain an acceptable level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students.
13. Assist the teacher in providing a well-organized, smoothly functioning class environment in which students are assisted in taking full advantage of the instructional program.
14. Provide homebound instruction as needed.
15. Transport and supervise students in school based and/or community based work experiences.
16. Engage in other reasonable duties during school necessary to the safe and effective operation of the school when requested by the principal.
17. Assist student(s) with positioning, toileting, feeding, therapeutic exercises and other needed services.
18. Administer and score screening and assessment instruments throughout the school system.
19. Load students safely onto and off the bus.
20. Make certain that wheelchairs are locked and Q-straps, brackets, and other wheelchair apparatus are secure.
21. Secure students in car seats, booster seats, and/or seatbelts.
22. Assist the classroom teacher in the implementation of the IEP and in preparing instructional materials.
23. Assist students with personal hygiene.
24. Perform necessary housekeeping duties not assigned to the custodial staff.
25. Maintain daily attendance and do monthly attendance reports as needed.
26. Assist in the office as needed.
27. Perform other duties as assigned by the teacher, and/or principal, coordinator or System Nurse.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of School Support Personnel.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 9 months Instructional Assistant Salary Schedule - salary to be established by the Board.

WORK HOURS: Reporting time to school and dismissal will be set by the Supervisor within the 7 hour work day.
