The School of Engineering Medicine at Texas A&M University invites applications for the position of Instructional Assistant Professor, Instructional Associate Professor, or Instructional Professor, commensurate with qualifications, and Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Medical Education. This is a full-time, 11-month, academic professional track (non-tenure) appointment with a start date in the Fall of 2024. The School of Engineering Medicine is headquartered in Houston, Texas, adjacent to the Texas Medical Center.

Responsibilities for this position are primarily academic service to SEM, but because the position is on the instructional track, some teaching will be necessary.

This position is a critical leadership position for School of Engineering Medicine (SEM) and is responsible for leading and directing the educational and administrative operations of the school's uniquely blended curriculum. This role serves as a leader within Academic Affairs to promote the school's core mission and goals and ensures our education is comparable and equitable as required by accrediting standards. This position is also responsible for central oversight of curricular quality and comparability, communication with faculty and staff, and is the primary point of contact for students in educational affairs. This position reports to the Executive Associate Dean within the School of Engineering Medicine.

Duties include:
  • Advises and supports the Dean by providing leadership, coordination, accountability, and in partnership with SEM's Curriculum Sub-Committee, oversight of the undergraduate medical education (UME) for SEM.
  • Leads, organizes, and coordinates the process for accreditation of SEM including the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
  • Ensures that appropriate measures of educational effectiveness, quality and quality improvement related to UME are in line with progressive best practices across top tier medical schools and academic medical centers.
  • Ensures the development of innovative, future-oriented educational programs; meeting accreditation standards; and forging effective inter-and intra-professional partnerships with faculty and staff to fulfill the academic mission of SEM.
  • Develops and maintains policies, processes, guidelines, resources and training for students and faculty involved in the UME curriculum.

· Facilitates growth and integration of engineering curriculum in collaboration with the College of

Engineering.

· Support open communications across all faculty/staff, both those within the school as well as those from

other colleges and institutions.
  • Help in the recruitment and retention of high-quality teaching faculty. Work towards integration of curriculum across all phases of the medical school's educational program.
  • Supervises and evaluates the academic leaders and instructional faculty.
  • Ensure appropriate affiliation agreements, MOUs, and PSAs are in place with hospital sites and practitioners (as needed).
  • Assist in growing student enrollment by examining best practices and innovating solutions to develop a long-term strategic enrollment plan and engaging the entire campus to support the plan.
  • Assist in annual planning, submission, and oversight of the fiscal year operational budget for UME.
  • Exhibit conduct consistent with the philosophy and mission of SEM and demonstrate understanding of accreditation standards and expectations specific to the department/unit and adheres to policies, procedures, and guidelines to meet or exceed such standards.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Minimum criteria to be required for an applicant to be deemed qualified (degree, experience):
  • MD, DO, PhD, EdD, JD or other equivalent professional degrees.
  • Administrative and/or educational experience within a medical school, academic medical center, or teaching hospital
  • Experience developing and implementing curriculum
  • Familiarity and experience with Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), Commission on Osteopathic College Accredidation (COCA) or Accredidation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accreditation and accountability standards
  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to plan and organize effectively; flexibility to work with others in a variety of circumstances
  • Ability to problem solve by analyzing issues and creating action plans; ability to manage projects and people
