The Secretary of State (SOS), Fiscal Affairs Division is recruiting to fill a permanent, full-time, Accounting Officer (Specialist) position in the Accounts Payable Section. The position is located in downtown Sacramento, near Light Rail, K Street Mall, and other amenities in the rich architectural-styled SOS building.

Under the general supervision of the Accounting Administrator I, the Accounting Officer (Specialist) independently performs professional accounting duties of average difficulty and requires an understanding of the accounting processes which include but not limited to Accounts Payable payment processing functions, analysis and reconciliation of data, and journal voucher corrections with the State Controller's Office (SCO) and the state accounting systems to ensure integrity of financial data. The incumbent will post accounting transactions in the Accounting FI$Cal system, analyze accounts payable files, and work on large Excel spreadsheets. This position will exercise moderate control in the administration of established policies and procedures, and has ongoing contact with management, control agencies, other government office, vendors, and members of the public.

  • Ability to analyze and resolve agency's payment discrepancies/delays with program units, vendors, and State Controller's Office (SCO) in a timely fashion
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both writing and orally
  • Ability to perform and assist with year-end duties
  • Knowledge and experience using the Financial Information System for California (FI$Cal)
  • Knowledge and experience in accounts payable
  • Possess a positive attitude, willingness to learn, and good interpersonal skills
  • Be resourceful, enthusiastic, demonstrate initiative and be self-motivated
  • Must have basic computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Excel and Word applications
  • Good attendance is especially desirable

Working Conditions

The Fiscal Unit experiences periods of peak activity throughout the year. As is typical in accounting offices, during peak times such as year-end, which typically runs from June to August, time out of the office will be on a restricted basis. During those peak periods, mandatory overtime will be required. Positions provide hybrid telework opportunities based upon the agency's telework policy and business needs.
