Advanced Practice Provider (NP/PA/APP)- Inpatient Endocrinology

UVA Health is seeking a PA or NP to join its Inpatient Endocrinology advanced practice provider (APP) team. The APP hired for this position will join a collaborative team of consultant APPs and physicians managing endocrine disorders for inpatients across multiple service lines at UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville, VA. The successful candidate will join a growing consultant team managing a list of 40-50+ patients, with approximately 75% of those geared toward glycemic management.

As this team grows, an APP-led diabetes consult service with a practice model emphasizing both autonomy and team collaboration will help our growing patient population continue realizing the many benefits associated with high-level glycemic management. Care of additional endocrine disorders will be managed in collaboration with an attending endocrinologist. Staffing & Scheduling Information:
• The standard staffing model includes 3 APPs on weekday day shifts, and 2 APPs on weekend day shifts. As the team grows, and along with a possible increase in demand, this staffing model may adjust accordingly.
• This team DOES maintain staffing on holidays. There is no night shift coverage.
• Shifts are 10 hours in length, making up 4 10-hour workdays each week.

Key Responsibilities:
• Patient Care:
o Conduct comprehensive assessments, including history and physical examinations of patients with endocrine disorders.
o Manage acute and chronic endocrine conditions, predominantly diabetes mellitus, but also thyroid, adrenal, and other metabolic disorders.
o Develop, implement, and monitor treatment plans in collaboration with endocrinologists, members of the patient's primary team, and other healthcare providers.
o Order and interpret diagnostic tests and laboratory results relevant to endocrine disorders.
o Provide patient education on disease management, treatment plans, and lifestyle modifications.
• Clinical Duties:
o Manage inpatient consultations and follow-up care for endocrine patients.
o Monitor and adjust medications and treatment regimens based on patient response and clinical guidelines. In the diabetes space, patients may require multiple medication adjustments on a given day.
o Coordinate care with specialists, surgeons, dietitians, and other healthcare team professionals.
• Collaboration and Communication:
o Collaborate with attending endocrinologists, fellows, nurses, and other members of the interdisciplinary team.
o Participate in case discussions, rounds, and care planning meetings.
o Communicate management plans and recommendations effectively with primary service teams, and patients and families, providing clear explanations and addressing questions/concerns.
• Documentation and Compliance:
o Maintain accurate and thorough patient records, including progress notes, orders, and billing/coding entries.
o Ensure documentation is compliant with hospital policies, legal requirements, and accreditation standards.
• Professional Development:
o Stay current with advancements in endocrinology and related fields through continuing education and professional development.
o Participate in departmental meetings, quality improvement initiatives, and research
o An annual financial allowance for CME/professional development is made available by the institution.

Clinical:
• Independently and in collaboration with physician(s) and interdisciplinary team members, provides comprehensive clinical and organizational direction and leadership to the healthcare provider team in the care of patients.
• Performs comprehensive history and physical assessment
• Documents findings noting pertinent normal and abnormal findings
• Orders and interprets the appropriate diagnostic labs and tests
• Forms medical diagnoses based on history, assessment and diagnostic findings
• Develops, implements and evaluates treatment plans
• Prescribes and recommends pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions
• Initiates appropriate specialty consultations referrals when requisite
• Initiates and evaluates clinical pathways and protocols
• Collaborates with Attendings and/or Fellows regarding admissions and community transfers
• Facilitates the timely flow of patients via collaboration with interdisciplinary team members and supports all interdisciplinary relationships
• Recognizes acute/emergent situations requiring immediate responsiveness and initiates life-saving interventions, alerting the interdisciplinary team members for assistance
• Recognizes and incorporates age-specific requirements, communicates plan of care with patients and families
• Advocates for patients and family members in educational needs, treatment options, participation in care and ethical issues and patient rights with recognition and consideration of the diverse needs of the individual/family
• Provides consultation in specialty area
• Maintains confidentiality of patient information
• Coordinates meeting applicable clinical standards for all disciplines in collaboration with interdisciplinary team members
• Explains the necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of procedure(s) to patients, patient families, staff and students
• Performs designated procedures after demonstrated competency

Educational:
• Acts as a clinical resource, utilizing both formal and informal opportunities for the education of other members of the interdisciplinary team.
• Provides education consistent with evidence-based practices and protocols
• Precepts APP students and provides mentoring for other APP's
• Provides outreach and education to the community and within the Advanced Practice arena
• Coordinates meeting applicable educational standards for all disciplines in collaboration with interdisciplinary team members

• Acts as a role model to colleagues, interdisciplinary team members, the institution and to the community
• Demonstrates respect to all within the institution and community

Position Compensation Range: $93,142.40 - $149,032.00 Annual

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Master's Degree as an Advance Practice Provider - Nurse Practitioner or as an Advance Practice Provider - Physician Assistant

Experience: One to two years minimum experience as an Advanced Practice Provider Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant preferred.

Licensure: License or license eligible as an Advance Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) as set forth by the state of Virginia. If Nurse Practitioner, license to Practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required. Must demonstrate and maintain all credentialing and licensing requirements of the UVA Medical Center, the Virginia Board of Medicine or the Virginia Board of Nursing, and the appropriate certifying bodies. Must be enrolled with all payers through Delegated Credentialing and can participate in Medicaid and Medicare for billing. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required. Current PALS/NRP, as required specific to position. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) as required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently traveling/bending/stooping. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 20 - 50lbs. May be exposed to chemicals, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.
