The Heavy Duty Diesel Strategies and Implementation Branch is looking for a motivated individual that has the technical background and ability to work on the development and implementation of several new programs, including the Advanced Clean Fleets (ACF) regulation and the Clean Truck Check (CTC) program. The Advanced Clean Fleets program is a first-of-its-kind program that pushes the first zero emission vehicles into the heavy-duty vehicle fleet and transitions the fleet away from combustion technologies.The Clean Truck Check program, also referred to as the Heavy-Duty Inspection and Maintenance Program, is a heavy-duty vehicle inspection and maintenance program created to ensure heavy duty vehicles continue to operate in the field with low criteria emission level.The selected candidate will play a significant role in protecting the public health of citizens in California through implementing programs that will be a model for other states and the rest of the world to follow moving forward.

Under the supervision of an Air Resources Supervisor 1, the incumbant ART I will play an important role in expanding California's Clean Truck Check program to ensure heavy duty vehicles continue to operate in the field with low criteria emission levels. The successful candidate will assist a team of Air Resources Engineers, Air Pollution Specialists and other Air Resources Technicians in gathering and analyzing data, and with developing, preparing, and finalizing a rulemaking package aimed at ensuring the timely repair malfunctioning trucks emitting excess emissions. The ART I's tasks may include researching various technologies and strategies, including gathering information on the effectiveness and cost of various technologies, the practices of truck fleets and manufacturers, and the characteristics of programs aimed at reducing air pollution and improving fuel consumption. The ART I may be asked to summarize data and information, perform calculations, and write and edit correspondence and reports, as well as to answer questions from stakeholders affected by CARB's regulations and respond to information requests from the public. The ART I may also assist with researching information and preparing documents in support of budget and contract planning. Administrative tasks may include clerical work such as preparing handouts, arranging meeting logistics, and providing other administrative support to ARS IIs, ARS Is, APSs and AREs.

      Working Conditions

      The positions at the CARB may be eligible for telework with in-person attendance based on the operational needs of the position under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria set forth in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program need. Background or experience with vehicular inspection and maintenance programs would also be a plus. The successful candidate will have demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and persuasively orally and in writing.
