Aircraft Mechanic I

Salary Grade - B22 - $54,614 - $88,703

Performs diagnostic and repair work involving fixed and rotary-wing pressurized cabin, passenger aircraft with multi-engine reciprocating or turbine engines, and single-engine non-pressurized aircraft for special purpose and passenger use. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Aircraft Mechanic II

Salary Grade - B23 - $58,184 - $94,913

Performs advanced diagnostic and repair work involving fixed and/or rotary-wing pressurized cabin, passenger aircraft with multi-engine reciprocating or turbine engines, and single-engine non-pressurized aircraft for special purpose and passenger use. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Aircraft Mechanic III

Salary Grade - B24 - $62,004 - $101,556

Performs highly advanced diagnostic and repair work involving fixed and/or rotary-wing pressurized cabin, passenger aircraft with multi-engine reciprocating or turbine engines, and single-engine non-pressurized aircraft for special purpose and passenger use. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Essential Duties

Aircraft I

  • Travels with aircrew to perform aircraft maintenance-related activities and repair and retrieve grounded aircraft.
  • Assembles and installs electrical, plumbing, mechanical, hydraulic, and structural components and accessories, using hand tools and power tools.
  • Conducts routine and non-routine aircraft maintenance inspections as required by regulations.
  • Diagnoses, adjusts, repairs and overhauls aircraft components and systems to include aircraft engines/assemblies involving electrical, electronic, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Disassembles engines and inspects parts such as turbine blades and cylinders for corrosion, wear, warping, cracks and leaks using precision measuring instruments, magnetic inspection equipment.
  • Inspects airframes for wear or other defects; checks for corrosion, distortion, and invisible cracks in the fuselage, wings, and tail, or propellers using magnetic inspection equipment.
  • Repairs and replaces pumps, engines, propellers, instruments, landing gear, airframe, control surfaces, and fuel systems.
  • Moves critical aircraft components using specialized equipment such as forklifts or overhead cranes.
  • Reports completed maintenance and repair work to lead worker.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Aircraft II and III

All of the above and:

  • Provides assistance to other mechanics in maintenance or repair procedures.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education (all levels): High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience: Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent at all levels.

    • Aircraft Mechanic I - 1 year Fixed/Rotary wing aircraft maintenance and repair work.
    • Aircraft Mechanic II - 3 years Fixed/Rotary wing aircraft maintenance and repair.
    • Aircraft Mechanic III - 5 years Fixed/Rotary wing aircraft maintenance and repair.


Substitutions: None

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Airframe Mechanic-Certificate
  • Powerplant Mechanic Cert


Preferred Qualifications (not required)

  • Inspectors Authorization Certificate

Aircraft Mechanic II-III

Greater skill and expertise in the above.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Environment: Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions with noise, vibration, and atmospheric conditions (fumes, dusts, odors, mists, gases or poor ventilation)
  • Subject to hazards such as moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals and works in narrow aisles and passageways
  • Movement: Climbing (ladders, stairs, scaffolding, etc) and Balancing (multiple surfaces, uneven walkways, etc)
  • Standing: Standing (long periods), Stooping/Kneeling (bending at the waist and/or resting/working on knees), Crouching (bending knees and spine) and Crawling (hands and feet/knees)
  • Reach: Reaching (extending in multiple directions), Pushing (to move objects/tools), Pulling (sustained force to move objects) and Lifting (above head and laterally)
  • Manipulation: Fingering (pinching, typing, working with fingers), Grasping (gripping tools with full hand) and Feeling (sensing size/ weight/temperature/ texture with hands)
  • Communication: Talking (expressing ideas with spoken words) and Hearing (perceive sound at normal speaking levels, receive oral communication)
  • Repetitive Motion: substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and fingers
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading, visual inspection of small defects/parts, using measurement devices; and assembly or fabrication of parts
  • Operation: Operate machines (drill presses, power saws, etc.), motor vehicles and heavy
