The Mass General Brigham (MGB) Anesthesiology Academic Medical Center (AMC) Division Chief of Critical Care Medicine is responsible for developing and leading the strategic and operational vision for all critical care clinical practice, education and research activities for the department across the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) campuses. The Critical Care Division Chief represents the MGB Anesthesiology AMC department within the critical care communities at the local, regional, and national level and is expected to contribute to the advancement of clinical care, administration, leadership, education, and research in critical care.

The position requires an outstanding clinical anesthesiologist/intensivist to lead a division of approximately 35 physicians, across the MGH and BWH, who care for our most complex patients in intensive care units (ICUs), educate the next generation of clinicians, and conduct innovative research. The applicant should be an exemplary academic anesthesiologist and intensivist who can assemble a multidisciplinary team which can lead and innovate in all facets of critical care.

An initial priority for this role is to lead and facilitate the integration of the currently separate Critical Care Divisions at MGH and BWH into a single academic Division of Critical Care Medicine. Effective and inclusive collaboration with leaders and staff at all levels, and across the currently separate divisions, will be crucial to successful integration of activities within the Division and Department.

Reporting and Collaborative Relationships

The AMC Division Chief of Critical Care Medicine initially reports to both BWH and MGH Anesthesiology Department Chairs. The reporting structure will evolve as the two academic departments become integrated into one AMC department with a single Chair. Critical care faculty will report to the AMC Division Chief and rely on this leadership role for guidance, mentorship, and performance management. The AMC Division Chief will work collaboratively with other clinical leaders in the department, partner with administrative leadership (VP and Executive Directors) and maintain effective relationships with relevant leaders outside of the department (surgical and medicine medical directors, ICU APP and RN leadership, etc).

Authority

With direction and guidance from Department Chair(s), the AMC Division Chief will have the following authorities in critical care medicine:

• Evaluate, on a regular basis, division personnel on clinical, teaching, research, and administrative effectivene

• Make recommendations to the Chair for promotions, recognition, or performance management as needed

• Design and oversee clinical programs, oversee quality and safety, implement quality measures, introduce care pathways, and otherwise manage all aspects of clinical care, in alignment with accepted and/or approved department, hospital, system, and national standard

• Contribute to decision-making by Department leadership with respect to the size of the division, new faculty hires, and faculty deployment to meet patient care needs at each site

• Oversee and support existing leadership such as medical directors and assistant medical directors of the various ICUs, as well as actively evaluate and optimize the governance structure to ensure local and nimble day-to-day decision-making, in alignment with overall strategic direction

Responsibilities

The Division Chief will demonstrate leadership in the following key areas for the newly integrated AMC Division:

Clinical

• Ensure appropriate, high quality, efficient, expert level provision of clinical services to all patient

• Oversee divisional systems for work structures and scheduling of shifts, call rotations, vacation/CME/time off in an equitable manner while fully meeting operational needs and in alignment with department and hospital policie

• Partner with the Chiefs of the relevant surgical, ICU services, and other clinical services as well as with Nursing Directors and APP leadership as needed, to align on shared staffing and operational goal

• Maintain the highest levels of quality clinical care, safety, and patient satisfaction, collaborating with department's Quality & Safety leadership as needed

• Cross-train intensivists to work together across different ICUs and care settings as needed

• Ensure that staff maintain skill flexibility, encouraging continuous skill set development and growth

Education

• Ensure that resident, fellow, faculty and other staff education receives appropriate priority within the division's activitie

• Engage all staff members to the division's educational efforts, including teaching/precepting, monitoring trainee performance and experience, and providing timely evaluation

• Partner with the residency leadership across both AMCs to ensure that the rotation curriculum is well-structured and provides an optimal educational experience for residents; participate in residency recruitment as needed

• Oversee Division Fellowship Director(s) to facilitate goal of providing an excellent training experience for ICU Fellows and provide the strategic guidance for the design of a premier unified critical care fellowship training program.

Research

• Lead and develop a strategic vision for the division's research portfolio; actively participate in and provide support for division's research activitie

• Sponsor, coordinate, and track research activities of the division, including publications and grants by division member

• Provide research mentorship to faculty and trainee

• Sponsor and encourage Division faculty to produce high quality research and innovation and to disseminate salient findings through publications and presentations in relevant and meritorious venue

• Encourage and establish research collaborations within MGB and externally

General

• Represent the Division in broader departmental/hospital/system strategic planning to ensure achievement of goals for clinical and academic growth

• Provide opportunities for leadership development of team members within the critical care division; mentor and support junior faculty in their clinical and academic development, supporting opportunities in leadership, teaching and research

• Hold regular staff meetings to address division issues, provide broader updates and gather feedback as appropriate

• Perform regular assessments and hold annual career conferences for faculty in the Division

• Ensure faculty follow established policies and procedures and annual training requirements; partner with administrative leadership as needed

• Be familiar with HMS guidelines for promotion of faculty and provide support for faculty in this proce

• Communicate regularly with department leadership and also coordinate with other Division Chiefs as needed, particularly if staff participate in multiple Division

• Connect regularly with Chiefs and leaders of other relevant services and groups (e.g. Q&S, Education, Surgery) to communicate clinical and administrative issues related to the service

• Support staff well-being/wellness initiatives as part of a healthy and sustainable AMC Division

• Recruit, retain, and support staff with consideration of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging principle

• Lead by example in all areas of responsibilities, exhibiting the highest levels of professionalism and compliance to policies and procedure

• Consider financial performance of the division's clinical operations and make efforts to optimize revenue capture opportunities and to be efficient with resource

Qualifications

Qualifications

Candidates must be Board Certified in Anesthesiology and able to obtain a license to practice in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The candidate must have also completed a critical care fellowship. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

• At least 3 years of proven leadership and management experience in the critical care space

• Exceptional clinical judgment

• Record of being an effective facilitator, teacher, role model and mentor and ability to lead in the academic setting

• Clinical or basic research experience

• Commitment to advancing diversity and equity, and creating a welcoming work environment for all

• Exceptional interpersonal and communication skill

• General knowledge of anesthesia and ICU financial and billing best practice

• Record of work as a consensus builder, enhancing teamwork and collaboration

• Demonstrated success in working as a member of a multidisciplinary team

• Flexibility to work across multiple location

• Experience within MGB preferred

The AMC Division Chief for Critical Care Medicine will be employed full-time, with an anticipated balance of clinical duties including call and academic and administrative time across both MGH and BWH campuses.
