ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER (Zoning)

DEPARTMENT OF PLANNING & DEVELOPMENT

Bureau of Zoning - Permitting Division

Number of Positions: 1

Starting Salary: $118,128.00 - $133,524.00

Under direction, manages and oversees Standard Plan Reviews, Administrative Adjustments, Planned Development Reviews, and Opinion Letters for zoning permits

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Oversees staff reviewing all permits subject to by-right, Zoning Board, and Planned Development allowances

• Assists staff in review of requests for Administrative Adjustments

• Reviews opinion letter requests issued on behalf of the Zoning Administrator and Assistant Zoning Administrator

• Develops, implements, and monitors programs designed to improve and expand departmental services

• Analyzes and evaluates program efficiency and recommends improvements for same

• Reviews, monitors, and coordinates written recommendations and supportive materials prepared for review and/or approval by the Zoning Administrator and Assistant Zoning Administrator

• Writes ordinances, creates policies, drafts text amendments, and briefs plan examiners on changes made to the Zoning Code

• Testifies before various City approval bodies such as Committee on Zoning as needed by the Zoning Administrator

• Directs subordinate personnel responsible for executing programmatic objectives and policies

• Establishes work priorities for departmental programs

• Ensures subordinates' compliance with departmental rules

• Apprises the Zoning Administrator and the Assistant Zoning Administrator of the status of projects

• Represents the department at conferences, meetings, and to the general public regarding the operations of the department

• Communicates instructions issued by the Zoning Administrator or Assistant Zoning Administrator to subordinate staff

• Prepares and manages Division's budget

Additional duties may be required for this position

Location: City Hall, 9 th Floor

Days: Monday - Friday (occasional Saturday hours may be required)

Hours: 8:30am - 4:30pm

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in a field related to the duties performed, including five (5) years of work experience related to the position, of which two (2) years are in a supervisory role related to the responsibilities of the position; OR

• Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's degree in a field related to the duties performed, including four (4) years of work experience related to the position, of which two (2) years are in a supervisory role related to the responsibilities of the position

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

This position requires applicants to complete an interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position will be selected.
