Job Duties

The Virginia Military Institute is accepting applications for the Assistant Director of Career Services. Reporting to the Director of Career Services, the Assistant Director performs the following responsibilities:
• Provides career-related assessment and advising for cadets, demonstrating current knowledge of career development theory, assessment instruments,resources, and strategies to promote effective career decision-makingprocesses.
• Builds partnerships between the Institute and external communities (public,
private, and not-for-profit entities) and the alumni agency emphasizing
development and marketing to expand experiential learning and full-time
employment opportunities.
• Instructs LS 350/351 (Leadership and Career Development) courses.
• Promotes use of OCS technology resources, including online career resources
among cadets, faculty, and alumni.
• Provides support in the development of OCS website content that is more
sophisticated and interactive.
• Hires, trains, and supervises OCS career ambassadors.
• Coordinates with the academic advising program leadership to develop career
related information in support of faculty advising and graduate education.
• Conducts outreach initiatives to cadets, especially third class cadets, to
encourage their early engagement with the OCS.
• Coordinates the development of an OCS group presence on LinkedIn and
educates cadets on building effective online presence using this medium.
• Supports the development of expanded resources and workshops on
professional skills such as business and dining etiquette, professional
networking, online presence, business communications and protocols.
• Engages in cross training efforts related to office technology and administrative
functions to support the mission of the OCS programs.
• Continually refines and develops knowledge of issues and trends in career
services and student development.
• Actively engages with VACE, conducts benchmarking activities with other
institutions to identify best practices which might be used to expand and improve
the OCS portfolio of services.
• Engages in ongoing professional development that will include an annual
individualized plan for increasing skills, knowledge and professional proficiencies.
• Serves as team member or leader for projects and task forces in support of the
career services office mission.
• Represents the OCS at events and performs other duties as assigned to support
the mission of the career services office.
• Participates in some evening and weekend events as scheduled in advance.
• Performs additional responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a related disciplinary field.
• Professional experience either in an educational setting or industry-specific position(s).
• The ability to counsel/teach students the skills and abilities needed for a successful job search.
• Expertise with computer and web-based applications with desired experience using MS Office Professional software and web site software.
• Knowledge of career development theory, career services and graduate education resources and technology applications.
• Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, along with a demonstrated ability to develop effective collaborative relationships with internal and external constituencies.

Additional Considerations

Master's degree in a related disciplinary field.
• Recruiting and marketing experience.
• Expertise with career counseling and career planning assessments.
• Knowledge of and experience in program assessment/evaluation and learning outcomes.
• Demonstrated skills with web tools and technologies supporting career services.
• A collaborative and team-oriented work style, demonstrated flexibility and adaptability, as well as the ability to effectively multi-task in a fast-paced dynamic environment.
