Job Duties

$7,500 Sign-On Bonus or up to 10K Student Loan Repayment may be available for eligible new hires

This position will plan, direct, and coordinate nursing activities with the Director of Nursing.

Effectively manage by leading Registered Nurses (RN), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN), Nursing Assistants (CNA), Medical Records staff, and other assigned clinical staff.

Coordinate patient care in partnership with the Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, Dentists, Psychologists/Mental Health Clinicians, and security staff to ensure that inmates are provided appropriate medical care.

Serves as relief for the Director of Nursing for the site.

Provide training to staff and education to inmates about healthy lifestyles as necessary.

Assist in implementing and ensuring longevity of evidence-based nursing procedures and guidelines for staff to follow for both administrative and clinical duties.

Develop a collaborative and efficient workplace with attention on delivery of quality patient care.

As a part of the VADOC Health Services Unit, this position supports the agency's mission to strive for excellence in healthcare by supporting and promoting the well-being of persons in its custody.

The Health Services Unit's primary focus is providing quality healthcare while being good stewards of the Commonwealth's resources.

Assignments to other duties or locations may be necessary to meet the clinical and administrative needs of the Department.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Possess and maintain a valid unrestricted Virginia RN license issued by the board of nursing or a multi-state compact license (if you are a recent graduate of a nursing program in VA and not licensed, the NCLEX-RN exam must be scheduled at the time of application)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of healthcare management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, clinical supervision, and coordination of people and resources
  • Knowledge of the information and techniques needed to assess and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities
  • Working knowledge of Health Information Portability Accountability Act (HIPAA), American Correctional Association (ACA), National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC), and Code of VA policies
  • Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems
  • The ability to communicate information and ideas effectively by word and in writing
Additional Considerations
  • Nursing experience in a top-level Manager/Director role
  • Nursing experience in a correctional healthcare setting
